Okay, so this isn't really a which saw is better thread, I'm pretty sure that's obvious. I've got a Poulan 3500 Timbermaster, and just got to pick up a Makita 6401 for the first time. The 6401 is 64cc's, but it's huge compared to the Poulan. I'm just wondering if there's any particular reason.
Thanks!

The Makita 6401 is from Dolmar. These saws are 64,73 and 79cc's. My guess would be that the size is what it is to accomodate the larger end of this saw line.

The 6401 is a decent saw if the price is right..............but why settle for 64cc's when 79 cc's can be had for the same weight!!!

+1 on its reason for being a full figured 64cc saw!

And if you find one like I did which was new and only a tad over $300.00 it becomes a GREAT value!:)

poulan

A closer choice would be to put up against the Poulan 4000 at 65cc's. Last year of production for the 4000 was 1986. You'd have to get it modded like mine to keep up with the Dolmar but then again I went strait for the Dolmar 7900's when I send the Poulan 4000 out for a rebuild and the Poulan rarely comes out to play anymore. I had no problem running the Dolmar 7900 with a 32" bar through a 54" silver maple Sunday. Rich, if I could have reached you I'd have ask you to come out and do the maple, not 5' but close and it had to be dumped uphill against the lean. Two wedge stack in the backcut and 4/1 block and tackle to get it over against the lean. I'm thinking the Dolmar is running a little too fat. Blew through a tank of fuel cutting just 5 rounds off the butt end of the log.
