Would it be possible to modify the cylinder to fit if you absolutely had too. Say to save a saw

The only reason I'm asking is we have a very limited parts availability for this hobby until someone starts reproducing some of this stuff and I'm just trying to keep what's out there useable if possible. Even if it not 100% correct I'd rather have a working 85cc poulan than one in the scrap heep. Thank you Mr. Mark your always a wealth of knowledge and hopefully I will learn a thing or two along the way

What I can say is that I am pretty sure I did just what Mark said can not be done. I put a complete 5200 top end on a 6900 frame. Mark and I discussed this and not sure but it did work and I am using the saw currently. I should go back in it and see part # etc on cylinder

Sounds good to me the more information about what we can do and not do the better.

Yes you could make a 5200 cylinder work on a 8500, you would have to remove part of the lower cooling fins to clear the intake setup.

Stephen, I'm not sure what you did, but like I said, a 5200 cylinder will not fit without modification.

I know Mark, I need to pull the cover and see just what I have on there. I need to see if the fins were already missing on the cylinder. I tree or something crushed the entire rear handle off of the donor saw (5200) that is why I used it.

Doing a little clean up just to see how bad she is. Piston is a little scored but nothing that can't be repaired

Now I need my decals and cylinder cover for this bad boy and I'll start putting the other saw back together.

Here's the piston and cylinder on the 6900

Looks like carbon. The back of the cylinder is nice and clean hopefully a new piston and rings and she'll be good to go.
