Picking out my climbing saw...

Stihl 019
Stihl 191T
Stihl MS200T (yeah right)
Husqvarna 338XP

I've excluded the Dolmar and Echo as I've already owned the Echo and it was nothing but problematic. The Dolmar is just severely underpowered. Any assistance on your preference of the 4 above models would be appreciated. Perhaps some models I haven't mentioned.

In the top of a pine today, the 200 I was using died. The fuel line became disconnected.

It took 115 pulls of my climb line to get the replacement up. I counted it, just for laffs.

Then, I panted.:D

Don't think my last post wuz a diss on Sthil, though. I cut wood this big (and bigger) all the time with my 200. But it ain't no punk-arse 14" bar.;)

blaster in my ignorance it looks like u fixin to ride that sucker to the ground..what am inot seeing that every body else knows..that happens a lot to me these days.:D

Go Rocky. I've had my 3400 for a LONG time, and never any trouble I couldn't attribute to user error. Further, everyone I know that has one has had equally good luck with them.

I'm a Husky man, but I haven't seen a good 335/338 yet.

Almost 5 bills for a Stihl is crazy, considering you can't work on the darn thing, and it's in much more peril at getting wrecked.

I'll stick with the Echo.

tony... he didn't ride that piece, he cut his line. That's why he's out of the picture.

Among the choices given I think the 019T/191T wins on price/ergonomics. It can't win on weight but it handles better than the others IMO. The ECHO 340 seems hard to beat in the weight and price arena but you already said you don't like it.

Nevermind chainsaws I often wonder why people will wear gloves full of holes day after day. With the amount of time we spend "at work" why pinch pennies when buying anything that makes "work" better/safer/easier?
By the way Rocky I have taken the throttle/handle apart on an 020 and I was ready to construct an onsite gallows when I finally got the pr*ck back together. Never again.

The 200T is a thoroughbred, not a draft horse. It is a Ferrari, not an M1 battle tank. It is designed to perform, and compromises were made.

My Echos have been good, especially so given how cheap they were. But the 200T is a special tool. Probably unique in combined attributes, for now anyway.

And I'm not a flag waver for any brand. I could live with just the 200T, 346XP, and 372XP.

If any professional can't make his tools of the best quality pay off in many orders of magnitude, then the deficiency does not exist in the tools alone.

I have a Solo 633 ( under powered but reliable ) and an Stihl 020T. The 020T was one of the first saws I ever bought. As for power no saw even comes close. I have had to replace the carb but that is minor for the amount of use that I have gotten from it.

I know climbers that swear but the Echos. I would dig deep and go for the 020T!

Brings to mind a couple of sayings:<blockquote>Good tools don't cost you money; they make you money.</blockquote><blockquote>Tools don't make the man.</blockquote>

Im a great believer in bang for your buck, I have owned or used 335's, 020's, ms200, 019t, echo 3400 and 350t.
In NZ dollars this is what they cost (roughly)

MS200 1400 (this equates to over 900us dollars)
338xpt 1300 (if only it worked better)
019t 800
3400 700
350t 750

For the money the echo is the best deal, but I choose the ms200 for its power and the fact it always runs well and will outlive the echo twice over. Its big bucks between the echo and the ms200 but after using and owning echos for years I appreciated the refinement and quality of the stihl.
