Quick change pipe

Hello dennis,
I see from your last couple posts that you are becoming a advocate of pipes or expansion chambers on modified chain saws. now here is what i'd do, I would install a 1 3/4 inch diameter pipe in the front of the muffler, then i would shorten the pipe header so it fit the formula for the length of the center section of the pipe and header. then make a quick change mount to mount the pipe to the muffler and the saw. now you have the best of both worlds, you can run it in the woods with only the muffler but when some smart alec like john l or rotax robert came by again you just take the pipe out of its case and attach it to the muffler and dust those guys off . just like installing a supercharger to your motor

Dennis, When I saw Johns picture I thought I was drunk! How Many fingers does he have? Looks like nine on the left hand alone!

John, People call me an alcoholic too, but I correct them by saying "I'm NOT an alcoholic, I'm a drunk......alcoholics have to go too many meetings"

Sedan...what happened there was we took some still photos from the video of the weekend...that is why some of the pictures turned out with lines in them...we had my dad filming the cuts..worked out really well for the timing aspect of it..
When timing the cuts again last night, I recorded a 2.46 cut with Johns 2171, Art Martin chain 11.5" dry frozen spruce...that stuff is so unforgiving...but the saw was pretty darn fast.

Ken, I can have the pipe off that 272 and a muffler on it in about 2 minutes..so I guess that will have to do...lol..besides I dont want to run that cylinder anywhere but a race...just in case...
I cannot wait to get pipes on my super 930 Jonsereds.. If anyone has some 125cc motorcycle pipes, I would be happy to buy them...

-need more power!!

Switchable Pipes and Mufflers

Ken and Dennis,

Can one literally just swap a pipe and muffler on a saw? No doubt when going from a muffler to an expansion chamber, the jetting will have to be richened up quite a bit. I seem to remember Ken telling me that the carb on my 3120 has a fixed high speed jet, so can you physically change the jet size when you change the exhaust? If it is possible to just swap a pipe for muffler with a little carb tweek on the fly? Maybe I should just have Ken do me up a pipe for my non-race 3120. How much more power would a "woods tuned" 3120 have with a pipe over just a relieved muffler?

Of course all this may be a moot point if Ken has gotten a little out of control with my 3120 mods! Nice pics, Ken and Dennis.

Dennis,
When you do a frame grab to get stills from your camcorder, do you have the option of selecting either of the two fields in the interlaced scan? If you can do this, you may find that John may have 9 fingers in one and 5 in the other. Other than this, if you have the ability to change the effective shutter speed to something faster, this will help eliminate some of the motion blur. Make it too fast and you won't have enough light, but most camcorders have a hell of an AGC range anyway. Oops....eh...sorry, I'll shut up now.

dougs 3120

Hello doug,
you can fit a pipe to your woods modified 3120 . it will jump your horsepower from 11-12 hp to 16- 17 hp. not bad for bolting something to the outside of your saw.of course you have to get your center section of your header and pipe just right. now on the carb youll have to get the mixture just right, a little richer on the high side. one of my projects im working on is installing a high speed jet on the 3120 carb. good to here from you doug

ken

Excellent Ken,
If you could give me the option of doing this, it would be a good thing I think. Can you make me a pipe for it? The only thing I'd be really concerned with is adjusting the mixture correctly when I swap over to the pipe. Can this be done with the carb as it is or would you have to modify it for high speed adjustability as well? Obviously, for race applications, the Tillotson carb is the way to go, but I suspect its use precludes the saw having a stock appearance because of the rear cover clearance as well as fitting an air cleaner to it. An adjustable stock carb would be nice in this application, if necessary. Having the ability to horse around making timed cuts with a piped, "semi race" saw while still being able to use the muffled saw in the woods would be of real interest to me. Let me know what you think :D

Doug just buy an extra carb. When you want to run the pipe slap it on. When you dont want to wake the dead put the other carb on. I am sure Ken could rig up a quick disconnect for you

Talked to Ken yesterday and he's going to fit an adjustable carb that's used on Stihl saws to my 3120. This way, I can still use the stock air cleaner. Man, I now realize what you guys are talking about when you say that Stihl stuff is expensive. This carb is over $100! The Walbro units on present Huskys have fixed high speed jets for EPA reasons, so he's going to also experiment with my Walbro and see if he can modify it for high speed adjustability as well, after the fact. He's also going to make me a pipe for the saw, which I'm sure will really make it scream.

Doug, I have an older 3120 with pipe and stock carb, seems to work very well except, Kens saw is faster, got it from a guy who could never get it dialed in with a tillotson. Jon

Well, the one year anniversary of the "Pre Clearwater" is falling upon us quickly....The very first time I met Robert and Gypo(for more than a couple minutes)....hmmm...was this a good thing...and what are we doing for the anniversary??

Well, Robert is worried about what might happen if you make it across the border into the US of Eh...
