Wouldn't it depend on the saw? And task at hand? I prefer a bar matched to the saw size, and choose the saw appropriate for the particular job. For climbing (about 75% of my cutting) I like a 14" on my climbing saw. Limbing with the 026, I like the 18" and for larger wood I want a bar about 1"-2" longer than the log diameter with a big enough saw to pull it. The 046 matches up real nice with a 28".
For big saws, I've always run a 36" on a Husky 2101 or 066, and ran 48" on the 3120 and 088.
Don't need much bigger than my 026 for the stuff I do . I have an 18" bar, but most of the time it's fitted with a 13". Most cuts are that size or less, so why have anything bigger? Just more cutters to keep sharp...
I like a 24" bar because I can cut logs on the ground without bending over. I do like my back and perfer not to stress it. I suppose the shorter guys like shorter bars.
With a topping saw, 16" bars work well. It extends your reach and allows one to cut little bigger hunks now and then.
i run 20'' stihl ES on both my 036's and 28'' on my 460, although i may switch to a 32'' when i wear out the 28'' i have run a 28'' on my 036 with good results.....wouldn't recomend a lot of cutting with that setup but in a pinch it works well enough:angel:
sorry Rob, at the time i just didn't have the $$$ for a new 460, i had just bought a new truck and $2,000 worth of climbing gear plus new tires (BFG A/T's 32-10.50-16) so ya gotta do whatcha gotta do!! like i said works in a pinch w/full skip but i wouldn't make a habit of it:blob6:
I worked with cutter in 93 in northern california, and thats all he used, 036 28' bar, he liked it cause sometimes we packed in an hour, no roads, helicopter logging .
Why a 036 why not atleast a 044 there is'nt all that much more weight between the two...I'm glad I have my skidders no packing into the bush just throw in the saw,2.5 gls of fuel, and bar oil and fire up the 748 and steer ..
