Hi all
i have a stihl 031 av that i purchased for AUD $50.00
ihave just stripped it and put it back together, replacing pulse pipe, and putting a carby kit thru it.
the problem i am having is that when the saw has been running for a while.
reaches operating temp, it wont idle and starts to really bg down and finally stall.
then it is a real dog to get started again.
it has a good spark even when hot ,however i have not checked the compression as i dont have a tester.
can anyone shine some light on this as it is a nice saw and i am not ready to throw in the towel
thankyou

Probably just running a little too rich. Turn the L screw 1/8 turn (or less) clockwise.

I tune the L when the saw is hot for the very problem you have. It's a balance between the L mixture and LA screw.

I assume you set the metering lever height correctly when you put in the carb kit?

I agree with the carb adjustment theory. do you have the newer carb with the crappy needle adjuster or the older carb with a L & H adj???? also check the coil. i had a real problem with my 026 and the coil. it was doing exactly the same thing. do you have a spark tester??? if so run the saw up with it attached and carefully watch the spark pattern. stihl has lifetime warrantys on most of their saws ignition systems.

thank you for the replies

the carby is the one with the H and L needles
a good question by lakeside regarding the metering level
that is something i didnt check
how do i set the correct level

Hi John,

I don't know if the procedure differs dependant on whether you have the Tillotson or Walbro carb. Check your e-mails, I've sent you the Tillotson service manual for the HU series carb. Walbro don't seem to be as forthcoming with the info. If you look at page 6 you will see the details on setting the lever.
