I just picked up a husky model 51, someone was throwing it away. I was able to get it running, and it runs great. The main problem is that when you throttle it, the chain will not spin. I'm not sure if there is a clutch issue or maybe something with the chain brake? The brake is in the off position, but nothing happens when you rev up the saw, there is no chain movement. Any ideas? Is a clutch typical? Easy to replace? Expensive? Thanks guys....

Is the clutch even there?
You would know if the brake was on......it would bog and moan and I doubt that could be considered "running great"

The clutch is there, and it does run well. When you throttle it it revs up but chain does not spin.

If it turns out to be the clutch. Correct me if i am wrong please on my info. But i think the husky 50,51 and 55 clutches all will work on this saw. The cost used is somewhere between $10-$25 for a used one.

Try tapping each shoe LIGHTLY with a small hammer and see if they are jammed in the slots of the clutch spider.....a little light oil won't hurt either...after you get them to move clean out the oil with carb or brake cleaner....don't get the cleaner into the needle bearing if you can help it though or you need to re lube the needle bearing

when the saw is reved, it almost sounds like the clutch is hitting the band of the safety brake. I heard a scraping type noise when I throttle it.

Sounds like the shoes are worn out possibly.....I got clutches somewhere here....I'll find some tomorrow and see if I can think of anything else to try....for some reason I seem to remember the 51 clutch shoes wearing faster than any other I have ever seen

Troll and me have discuss your problems.
It doesn't sounds like a clutch problems. That would rather have the opposite symptoms -, sounds more like the chainbrake is on all the time.

Parts from several saws will fit the 51 -Husky 50 Rancher, 50 Special,Husky55, Jred 2051, 2054(both versions), 2055, 490, 590, and several Partner models, except for the engine.

I hope Pest can hook you up with shoes.
But if for some reason he cant, I got a used 51 clutch out on a ole parts saw of mine. I will pull it and put it on one of my running saws and test it if need be. Just let me know, and I hope Pest come through for you though.

To see if it is the side cover brake band or not. Remove the cover and just put the bar nuts back on with the bar and chain. Then try and run it. I did have a Partner 500 do this once.

Wait a second

Is this a spur sprocket or a rim drive? Check the sprocket either way..if there is a groove worn through the center of either it can sound like that. I bet that's it
