Well, next project in line now, some others are getting bumped for this one.

Big end bearing is seized on this. So I finally took the lilberty of making a case splitter last week, knowing I have a few huskies that need bottom end work, much better then the last time I did it. Going to be giving this saw the full meal deal, machine cylinder, pop up piston, little more port work, probably do a little port timing work, since I've never tried it before, I picked up a degree weel last week too. Here are a few pics.

Homemade case splitter worked great. Works 100% but doesn't look 100%, that's ok by me. Parts will be going through the parts washer next week at work!

Nice work, the splitter looks ok to me! I welded one up too, looks not too different than yours. I tried to make one with enough adjustability to make it universal. It works on large and small Husky mounts, but i haven't tried it on a Stihl yet.

The 371/372 makes for a great project and is a real worthwhile beast to dig into. Some good work there!

Thanks ya these saws run real nice modded up.

Will, are you taking off? If you need bottom end parts for 395, let me know. Your splitter looks great.

Hey, ya just for a week, the end of April. Going to Disneyland. I'm pretty sure I'll need bottom end parts for 1 395, the other, the crank is good, but I think it needs bearings and seals, I'll know when I bust them apart, thanks for the offer, I'll let ya know when I get there, maybe a couple of months at this point.

Did a little port work today, when i had a spare hour. Just worked the lower transfers a little, got a little more blending and smoothing to do, but they are pretty close to where I want them.

Got some more work done the last couple days, got the bottom end together the other day, today I made a mandrel for the cylinder 50mm one, man these saws have big squish stock, with gasket it measured at .040", so I'm machining .040 off the base and going with a .020 popup to start, see where that takes compression.

Nice job on the machining the base.

Got any timing numbers yet ? Inquiring dataholics want to know.

Thanks!

The exhaust was raised last time this saw was rebuilt, it was put together with no gasket, so when I checked it this time with gasket it was 168ex and 152int. Didn't check transfers. Hoping to end up with 160ex and 155int. I've taken .040 off the base and will be taking .020 off the piston, total change of .020 not sure on how much that is in deg. I'll get the numbers once I get the piston done.

0.020" ? perhaps 4 degrees ? We'll see.

Thanks for the info.

Did you bolt the degree wheel to a flywheel puller ?

I've got a large metal degree wheel but need to make a puller or something so I can attach it easily.

All I did was put a nut on the crank half way then threaded a stud into that nut then bolt the degree wheel to the stud.

Your splitter looks real good to me, after splitting a couple I can see that the splitter needs to be very rigid. Yours looks like it would be. Great looking work, you seem to be getting along with that lathe real well.

Ya, the lathe is real nice addition to the tool arsenal! Fun to run as well.
