I am rebuilding my log splitter and will use a Haldex 16 gpm pump. My question is does it matter in which direction the pump is turning? Also I see that the filter is on the return side on some splitters and on the suction side on others. Whats Up :help:

Yes the direction the shaft is turning is critical with the Haldex pump changing rotation will reverse flow.

Filter location has been discussed often. The fluid in the system runs in a circle so as long as all the fluid passes through the filter the it is cleaned. The area between the tank and the pump is subject to a maximum of 14# of vacuum under ideal condition any restriction in this area will cause starving of the pump leading to failure.
Placing the filter right after the pump would subject the filter to pressures that will damage the filter.
A filter placed in the return line filters all the fluid , is not subject to excess pressure, and does not restrict flow to the pump.

The haldex 16gpm pumps usually are coupled to an 8 hp or larger motor.
The suction line uses a strainer in the tank if any is used at all. Return line hydraulic filter is usually 10 micron. So if the tank has clean oil and the oil returning to the tank is filtered then a suction line filter is not necessary. Do a search on this forum for suction line filter, logsplitter filter , haldex or any other splitter terms. Lots of information.
