Did Homelite experiment with something like a ringless piston at one time, dumb question I know, but I really don't know how else to explain it. I've been working on some E-Z's to get them to run again and came across this different looking piston, the top of the piston appears to take the place of the rings.
I took some pic's to show what I'm talking about, first pic is of two saws, left one has the usual two rings, the right one is the odd one. Second pic is of the odd looking piston but closer up to show what I'm talking about.
The saw has point ignition and is the red and white color, if that helps tell how old the saw is, darn thing has compression but not much fire, that other saw is going to be a donor saw to get this one running.
Caution the pics haven't been resized, they are a little on the big side
