I would like to know how many times your chains have won anything, anywhere? Mike

The man is asking a question, most armchair saw builders normally respond the way Mike does. Just take Mike with a grain of salt. If BS was electricity Mike would be a POWER HOUSE
You can take that to the bank:p

Hi Mike, is it possible that you misinterpreted what theman was asking? It could be that he`s thinking it would be really interesting to know that Art`s chain has won or placed hundreds of times in serious competition.

Methinks folks are getting a little sensitive around here...

OK, and so a few feel they need to defend their pal Art. But from what I've seen, Art isn't thin skinned at all, and has no trouble telling the difference between the white and the dark on chicken schizt.

Maybe the man could have worded things a little better, maybe he believes Martin's chains are good for that last 3% edge and nobody in the east has figured that out yet...

One thing that impressed me: I was talking to a competitor at Rochester last summer; he was a little cagey about his chain. Art posted pictures and explains his ideas.

Let's dry this out:

theman is from the East coast, from his alluding to Albany, which
I will take as from New York.

His knowledge of saw racing nationwide is limited, as is mine.

He wants to know if Arts chains are known on his side of the map.

We all know that Art is The Man, and not theman.

Since when have we ever trusted theman?

It would take me a LIFETIME to learn what Art knows, just sit
back, read, and try to learn as much as possible.

Arts chains do nothing but win. Everywhere and anywhere.

Sorry, theman, no offense.

Please take all of this in good nature......

I don't have any full race saws, nor an Art Martin chain, but I have had the pleasure of running Dennis's 272 with the KD barrel, pipe and AM chain. One fast saw!!

Someone told me that there is a guy who files for some of the Stihl Timbersports pros charges around 650-750 per chain. And his chains are no better than Art's. Unfortunately, it sounds as though Art has retired.

as well, I've witnessed Rotax Robert running Art's Poulan 6 cube 655 (if that is the right number) Wow, what an amazing saw! No pipe, not sure if it had a stock carb, don't recall if it has a special head or not, but it just flat rocks. It will beat any 2100 out there, right rupedog? Ummm, ouch, eh?

I believe that theman is referring to Albany,Oregon and thus loses his honorary link to the East coast. Besides, if he were from the East coast he would already know everything, as I do, and would be giving the answers rather than asking inane questions.

theman

Aside from the pride involved, hotsaw racing is a business for competitors like Mel Lentz and the ilk, and not only are they going to be extremely unlikely to make the secrets that make them competitive common knowledge, but consider this, would they want the world to know if Art Martin was filing chains for them? If the cat was out of the bag that Art is the secret to their world class chains, anyone with the bucks could conceivably buy an Art Martin chain and be on the same playing field with those guys.

I don`t think that Art needs defending but just to hit the high points of his carreer, here is a man who is a champion running his own chain and equipment and developing new thoughts and technique regarding production of racing chain that are still valid today, while excelling in "day jobs" which range from west coast timber feller in the big wood to Captain in a busy professional fire department while remaining married to the same, by all accounts wonderful, woman. Many of us could only wish to be so succesful.

Initially I thought that Rupe reacted wrongly, but the more questions you ask the more I think that you are either trying to tear Art down or that you need to stop and reread what you are posting before hitting submit.

Here in the East, I file chain for Mel Lentz, Gaston Dupriere and Daniel Boulangier, I even file chain for Rotax Robert in Wash.
If anyone wishes a chain from me send 5$ per driver and model of chain, turnaround is approx. 90 days. The chain is gauranteed to place or $ refunded.

It seems as if theman asked THE WRONG question(LOL)!! I read this thread and THE father through it I got I kept imagining a pack of starved dogs just ripping and tearing a dead carcus to pieces. I dont think he meant anything offensive by it, but when I saw THE thread yesterday I wondered how long it would be before THE Sh$$t hit THE fan!!........Take care, Wade

Why would a man come onto this site and, his very first post, ask a question that could be construed as a criticisim of Art Martin? To top it off he calls himself theman when in my opion Art Martin is "The Man" on this site. Mike

Mike, FWIW when I first read the opening post I didn't see it as critical or sarcastic. I thought he just wanted to know if anybody was competitive with Art. Now I wonder-did you read him right or just set him off?

Hi theman,

I don`t profess to be in the inner circle of any of those guys, but when I have asked or tried to get a look at their chains I have been given the cold shoulder. Must be that I lack your charm and wit. :D BTW, I felt that my post to you was cordial, at least for me. Don`t take the heat.

I have noticed in your posts, a few allusions implying that you rub elbows with these guys and have been able to glean information from them. Why don`t you share a little about yourself and tell us how you got up close to those fellows? Maybe share a few tips with us? Thanks.

Hi Guys- I'm no expert on hotsaw racers and the circuit, but I do remember some basic things: Many competitors in the modern hotsaw circuit use Art Martin chains. In fact, there are only a handful of top professionals who can dress chains at Art's level. I remember seeing some shows here locally ( southern oregon/northern california ) where a contest actually came down to two competitors running Art Martin chains. These were shows that were licensed by the Stihl Timbersports series so I think that means they are in the realm of the "big boys". I've been watching timber carnivals since I was a kid in the mid 70's and the name Art Martin has been synonymous with champion for as long as I can remember. I've met several of the gentleman previously mentioned, including Hollis Baughman and Mel Lentz, and they're all great people and competitors.

One thing to note also- Art's personal saws aren't quite as "hot" as some other racer's saws, but he wins contests time and time again, strictly from the quality of his chain and the technique of the person running the saw.

Howdy- No, I can't provide the dates or times where shows came down to a head to head Art Martin chain war- The times I was watching were long ago and it's all I can do to remember what even took place, but I do remember hearing about it. As for the people who use Art's chains personally, you could contact Art yourself. He's very friendly and will answer any questions you have.

Howdy- I know of several places that Art has raced or has had people use his equipment to race and also several places where his chains have been in action. However, I think the best person to answer your questions is Art himself. At this point you're not striking me as a serious minded connoisseur of hotsaw competitors or equipment.

theman,
why is it so important that you know specific times and places that Art or his chains have won? What are you digging for? Why haven`t you contacted Art himself? Your whole thread is very cryptic and somewhat like you are trying to expose something. Right now none of us know who you are, and that`s fine, so if you have something to say then get on with it please. Any thread related to Art draws alot of interest but I`ve about lost it on this one. You haven`t said anything of substance that I can see and so far it seems like we`re all arguing with a teenage girl the way you reply. I`m beginning expect your next reply to be "well because". I for one don`t know what you are getting at and I don`t think anyone else does either. How about if you have something to say, just say it, or expect the rest of us to check out of your little epic.

You did clearly state that guys like Mel would tell you who is doing their chain. I know first hand that he will skirt the issue. You implied some sort of kinship or inside track by acting as if they would share this important info with you. I don`t consider any of the regulars here to be dummies and we see you riding the fence with vague references and ambiguous statements, how about you play like a big boy and get to the point?

I really don't like to respond to a person who doesn't have the balls to use his own name but hides behind a pseudonym to disguise his identity. What is he hiding that he can't reveal in his member profile?
As far as the egotist who thinks his chains are worth $600. to $700. is out of touch with reality.
In fact my saws and chains have beat him consistently in front of his hometown crowd. This humiliation caused him to go bullistic and make an ass out of himself in front of the crowd.
If "theman" wants my credentials, I would be glad to send them to him. All he has to do is send me his name and address. I think that would be more than fair.
My address is:
8626 Pheasant Club Ct.
Orangevale, CA 95662
Email: [email protected]
For those that are interested, I did beat Roy Booth Sr., the three time winner of the "tournament of the Kings" in 1981 when he was making a tour of the west coast logging shows. In fact he came over and congratulated me on my fast chain and cut. "theman" should know this since one of his family was with me at the time.
My most satisfying time was in 1964 when I beat the World Champion, Martin Hendrick, at a logging show in Oroville, CA. He had just returned from Hayward, Wisconsin. That was when I introduced the 10.2 cubic inch West Bend onto the curcuit. I was undefeated for two years to all comers from Washington, Oregon, and California.
I also did well at the P "N" E 2 week show in Vancouver, B.C. where many countries were represented. I was matched against Mervin Lentz, Mel's dad and 7 time World Champion. I won that match. There are many other "big boys" that I went against during my thirty plus years of competition. If there is enough interest, I would be happy to compile my records and post it on the Art Martin thread at a later date.
I had to quit competing in 1982 because of a serious heart problem that I developed after 5 years of chemo-therepy for a deadly type of leukemia for which I received over 200 unit of blood and blood products. Because the blood was not tested at that time (1975) I came down with Hepititis C. At least I am able to help people with racing chains. I really don't have anything to prove and am satisfied with what I have accomplished.
Don't chastise Rupedoggy because he is on to this guy too.

Best regards
Art

Hey Rupe,

Sorry, good friend, I didn't mean to step on yer toesies!!! Just a friendly rib!!

Yep, I do now remember that your saw beat the 655 at Clearwater. Robert was having problems with it. But he told me that normally it is one amazing saw. I believe his comment was that it usually beats anything else in its class. And a friend of mine was at the Deming log show, and that was the saw that he remembered being the most impressive that day. I know you weren't there.

And yes, your 2100's are mighty awesome--Johhn's too.

And I've seen and run your chains... looks like you are pretty slick with a file yerself!!!

I have won with Arts chains, and I have defeated the fastest sawmen in the world including Lentz and others throughout raceing kingdom. I have also been 2nd, 3rd and even 4th with Arts chain heck I even flat out lost lost a time or two. That being said, those who place the chain above all other aspects of sawracing will lose, the chain is only one aspect of the sport. You better be able to put the whole package together.

Just for the record though if you want a few results from a recent major show check out the morton loggers jubilee results. Although not first places the stocksaw race with Arts chain took 2nd by .01 seconds against Cahoon and my little 325 Rotax took 3rd against a host of 500cc saws again with Martin chain.

And what the heck, I have a chain on a saw that sits in the back of my pickup right now that I will race anyone in the world with and I filed it myself...and you will lose !!! My competitors should send Art a thank you that he doesnt file all my chains.

To Mr. Martin a true champion, THANK YOU
