Howdy Bob, theman, everyone-
I think the reason a lot of members of this site defend Art Martin adamantly is because many of them have met Art in person and he has supplied them with a lot of knowledge regarding race chains and chain maintenance in general. Theman did touch a few sore spots but that strictly due to his lack of social skills ( the use of requicent terms "dude" and "man, I was trying to such&such" ) and not the questioning of Art's accomplishments.
If you gentleman would refer back to Art's lengthy post on the Art [of] ( Martin ) of making race chains, you'll see that he is providing the general public on this forum with information that is not readily available anywhere else. You won't find many people in this world that will share that information the way Art has. Art also has something not many of us have either- decades of experience.
I've been in the woods a long time and I know from personal experience that Art's techniques are proven and reliable. As I mentioned before, I've met some of the gentleman "theman" mentioned, including Hollis Baughman, who actually taught me how to hand file square ground chain, in a fire camp in 1994. Bob, if you're interested in chain filing and not bull, check out some of the posts on chain grinding and filing here that were made by Art and try the techniques out. I'll bet you'll find out they work and work well.
