Anyone using radios to communicate with people on the ground. We seem to always have a problem with running the chipper and discussing our next move. The other day we were in a backyard with major highway about 100 yards away one had no problem hearing on the ground but once aloft I could not hear a thing. I have a small pair of radios we use for hunting but not sure wear to put it to keep it out of the way and still hear it.

You don't the radio nearby. You can leave it on the ground. All you need is the remote headset. Motorola makes one that actually fits inside a work helmet.

We use them on crane jobs where we are picking over the house with no line of sight. Otherwise, we use hand signals.

Try these, they are Peltor Power Comm headsets:

I purchased four headsets and love them. One of the best safety devices that I have bought. I can be up taking the top down, running the saw and still communicate with everyone, even the guy running the chipper. They are expensive but look on eBay, they occasionally come up.

Radios are an excellent idea. If they can't hear what you are shouting. Motion to the radio (use a hand signal) have them backup about 20 feet away from any loud noise and communicate.

Or you could use the helment inserts.

Those seem like they would be priceless on a job site

More pics.

I added a "wind sock" to my mic to keep the sweat out as the voice activation works best if the mic is almost touching your lips.
