Hi Folks,
I inherited a Remington PL-4 Widowmaker chainsaw from my dad.
I call it the widowmaker because I don't think they had invented safety yet back when they made that and many other saws.
It reminds me of some of my Gravely model L attachments.
Anyway, that saw has molded into the gas cap "Use 1/2 pint of oil to a gallon of gas" which is as you know a 16:1 ratio.
That ratio I assume is based on the conventional oil available back then.
I have a motocross race bike that I run synthetic oil/gas mix at 40:1 and I use the same gas in my poulan weedwacker, leafblower, recreational 20" and 14" Poulan saws and my Stihl 046.
So after doing multiple searches and reading all the threads here (I think) about oil used back in the mid 60's when this old saw was made and modern synthetic oil, I am going to go ahead and use this same 40:1 synthetic mix on this old Remington.
Notice I didn't ask what you all would do because I didn't want to start another "Here we go again" thread.
Even though the exact question I would have asked was not in any of the threads.
The topic of converting mix ratios from old style oil to modern synthetic oil seems to be subjective anyway.
And I can see why no one would want to "recommend" any ratio using synthetic oil vs conventional because of the liability issue.
Without knowing the exact composition of the metals that are lubed by the oil/gas mix it would be more difficult to advise.
But if anybody wants to chime in and say "DON'T DO IT BECAUSE.......", I would be welcome to hear it.
Thanks,
Ozzie
