I have done small engine work before... just wondering how hard it is to change rings in a stihl ms260?

Also... when did stihl change their numbering from 026 to ms260?

Relatively easy... maybe 40 minutes... first get a workshop manual.. but are you sure you need too? usually in an 026/260, when the rings are shot the piston or cylinder is also.

The numbering changed in 2000. There are two sizes of MS260 pistons - 44mm and 44.7mm. Be sure to get the correct type.

Andy, how do you know which saw needs the 44 versus the 44.7 I was not aware of the change in 260's??? I just put in a 44mm piston and ring kit on an 026 Pro today. Tom

There is a serial number cut-off for 44mm at 262 287 363 but it seems slightly unreliable. Best way is to measure the cylinder if you're close to this number.
