Hello all. First time post and new member to A.S. Just bought a Stihl MS 660 (yesterday:blob2: ) to add to the 036 and MS200T. Got the MS 660 with the 3/4 wrap, dual port muffler, and 36" and 24" bars:rockn: . I'm very excited and can't wait to bury the bar in some large oak I've got to cut up. I've read that the MS660 is the king of saws:rock: . It appears most of you think fairly highly of the old 036 / newer MS 361 and also the MS 200T. If you had to have only three saws to cover all of your wood cutting needs, would this line-up qualify as the royal family?

The 036 was my first chainsaw, purchased new in 1992 and running as strong today as it was after the first few gallons of gas. I've used it for limited arborist work and a lot of firewood cutting. Always wanted an 066/MS660 and finally worked my way into one. Out of fairness to the other great saw makers, are there other three-saw line-ups you all can recommend? Husqvarna 395 - 357 - 338?

:jawdrop: It has been established here for some time that the MS660 is the King, the 372xp the Queen, and the MS441 the Prince.

That adds up very well, as the 441 is full of features traditionally related to Husky.

The Crown Prinsess is probably the MS361 (not 036), as she also has some features traditionally related to Husky.

I wish I had a 660 but I don't need that much saw. I would have a blast running one if I did. yeah it's the King the Queen has to be the 372xp my pride and joy and the best small saw 346xp or if you climb ms200. my choices if I only had 3 660/372xp/346xp

Maybe I'm a little out of date, but my "royal family" is an 034 super (20"), an 064 (24"), and an 084 (30"). Have a longer bar for teh 084, haven't needed it yet. Haven't met a tree I couldn't get through yet............

Thanks for the replies. Some great three saw lineups out there. I spoke with a couple of timber fellers when I picked up the MS660 and they could not say enough good things about the 441. There was a 372 sitting on the shelf too. I would love to have those two saws in the stable but was on a mission. Been waiting a long time for an MS660. The thing cuts so crazy fast, I don't know if I'll ever want to pick up the 036 again. I've died and gone to heaven:blob2: .

Just need to get the dual port muffler on it. The salesperson thought I should break the saw in before I put the dual port on. Any thoughts? He said I don't need to worry about the limiters on the high speed jet. Is this true? I really don't want to burn up this new saw by running it too lean when I put the dual port cover on. Any advice would be welcome.

Im happy with my combo... some days I wish my 460 was 660!

And some days I wish it was a 441!

Arg!

All in all, the three saw setup rocks... just depends on your style what three saws you end up with.

go for it!!!!!

No it wont hurt it and all you may need is about 1/8 turn richer if that much

I have a fairley late model 066 that is stock except a muff mod plus the factory dual port and it was right on rpm (13K) with just the slightest
of counterclockwise adjustment..... But you need a tach to be sure

If you think it cuts sick fast now,,,, wait till you put the dual port on

Oh yeah welcome to AS,,,, more saws to come!!!!! LOL

Should I wait until the saw is broken in ? The guy at the shop said to run at least two tanks through it. I have the dual-port in my sweaty little hand and can't wait to put it on. Gonna really work her out this saturday and would love to have the dual port muffler on it when I bury the bar in a 3 foot oak.

I've got a tach, so can make sure she doesn't over rev. Thought about setting it back to 12,500 or so, just to be safe? I usually run my saws rich - 40:1 or there abouts. I'd rather foul a plug than melt a piston. I've had the same plug in my 036 since I bought it new in 1992 and have cut several hundred hours on it. Running it rich has worked well but maybe I've been overly paranoid? You all are the experts, so I'll take whatever advice I can get.

They used to come with them if you wanted it now the EPA wont allow I dont think,,,It wont hurt it but if it makes you feel better run a couple of tanks through it..... Id try to find a # closer to 50 :1 like 47 or something and I do recommend the Ultra Synthetic oil and fresh premium fuel12.5-12.8 would be a safe # but dont baby it too much,,, 40:1 is good for milling,,,,

I've got a 66, and technically I don't NEED one, but it is SO cool to run...:hmm3grin2orange:

I tend to like Huskys under 70cc, but thats just me, maybe ...:biggrinbounce2:

The 361 is a sweet saw, but the 357xp is about the same, IMHO...

I am told the 200t is in a class of its own, hmmm.

Saws differ.... Putting the dual port cover on my 066 took it from 13k to 13,700... I run mine at 50:1 Stihl Ultra 12,750 (or so) for cross cutting, 40:1 and 11,500 ->12k for milling... Whatever you do, check it... A lot will depend of the fuel you run (alcohol or not?) and it can change quite a bit in the first 10 tanks..

I'd run a couple of tanks before you mess with the limiters and muffler - just in case it needs any warranty work (unlikely, but..)

All,

Thanks for the great advice. I put 3 tanks of gas through the saw today. I was cutting 24"-36" walnut. Man what a dream. My buddy helped out. He has an MS290....... There may be a 660 in his future.

I'll be sure to post some picks from the next firewood session. I have a 4' to 6' black oak to cut up next....

only 3?

I can't imagine only having 3 saws. As a recovering alcoholic, I need an addiction......mine is saws:rockn:

I had to bribe the wife to get the MS660. Turned a large part a recent bonus into this saw and had to fork over $999.00 to the wife to keep things on an even playing field. She's buying clothes as we speak.

I do arborist work on the side and have paid for all of my tree equipment many times over (not bad for a hobby, I think. Get free firewood out of it too). I have two jobs lined up that will pay for the saw 4 times over in the next six weeks (just working Saturdays). Wife still said no go. "You buy the saw, I buy clothes". She's gonna look awful purty wearing all those new clothes. Its a pitty she won't wear them woodcutting with me....

As addictions go, it ain't bad.

But with a 660 and a 290, I figure I can buy one more saw, probably an 026/260, without it officially being an addiction. So once I get the small saw, that's it.

No more.

I know when to stop.

Really.

good luck with that:hmm3grin2orange:

Be careful

More oil (40:1 vs 50:1) means less gas. Gasoline is what keeps the engine cool. A little extra oil is good, just make sure the H screw is rich enough. I like em' to four-stroke a little more when they are being broken in. Heat is the enemy. Boy, I would love to have a 660! Maybe someday...
