Coal, oil, and natural gas received $5.9 trillion in subsidies in 2020 — or roughly $11 million every minute — according to a new analysis from the International Monetary Fund.

Explicit subsidies accounted for only 8 percent of the total. The remaining 92 percent were implicit subsidies, which took the form of tax breaks or, to a much larger degree, health and environmental damages that were not priced into the cost of fossil fuels, according to the analysis.

“Underpricing leads to overconsumption of fossil fuels, which accelerates global warming and exacerbates domestic environmental problems including losses to human life from local air pollution and excessive and road congestion and accidents,” authors wrote. “This has long been recognized, but globally countries are still a long way from getting energy prices right.”

The report found that 47 percent of natural gas and 99 percent of coal is priced at less than half its true cost, and that just five countries — China, the United States, Russia, India, and Japan — account for two-thirds of subsidies globally. All five countries belong to the G20, which in 2009 agreed to phase out “inefficient” fossil fuel subsidies “over the medium term.”

Setting the price of coal, oil, gas to reflect their true cost — say, with a carbon tax — would cut carbon dioxide emissions by around a third, helping to put the world on a path to keeping warming below 1.5 degrees C. Such policies would also raise revenues equal to 3.8 percent of global GDP and prevent close to 1 million deaths from local air pollution yearly.

“There would be enormous benefits from reform, so there’s an enormous amount at stake,” Ian Parry, an environmental policy expert and lead author of the report, told the Guardian. “Some countries are reluctant to raise energy prices because they think it will harm the poor. But holding down fossil fuel prices is a highly inefficient way to help the poor, because most of the benefits accrue to wealthier households. It would be better to target resources towards helping poor and vulnerable people directly.”

Hahahaha now I see why you didn't originally post the entire article or the link. What garbage.

"Most of the benefits accrue to wealthier households". What BS. The people making $150k/yr don't care that it now costs $120 to fill their Escalade when it used to cost $60. The single mom who makes $35k/yr is going to have a hard time coming up with $50 to fill her Honda Civic, when it used to cost $25. This is especially true when the costs of fuel also increases transportation costs, driving up the price of EVERYTHING. Not only does her gas cost double, her food is 60% higher too.

Whole article is ridiculous.

That you don't agree with the link I posted doesn't mean it ain't true. It's a giant rabbit hole to go down and will just end up in political where it belongs, fact is, I'm surprised it hasn't been flagged already.

The propaganda these people believe is terrifying….

That you agree with it sure as hell doesn't mean it's right, either.

A tax break is not a subsidy.

Whatever health and environmental damages are associated with fossil fuel use are far outweighed by the positives they provide. Cheap energy is what makes living in the 21st century possible, and brings with it access to clean water, clean abundant food, shelter, easy safe transportation, jobs, health care, etc.

How the hell does making all of that more expensive RAISE revenues by 3.8% of the GDP? Let me take money out of your pocket, and make it more expensive for you to do every single thing that you do. Explain to me how this makes you more money?

Humans will switch away from hydrocarbons on their own, when it makes sense to do so. Forcing it prematurely will only cause pain and suffering that simply doesn't need to exist, and slow down the whole process. You're not saving the world, you're not helping anyone, you're only causing more pain and suffering.

Even rednecks will flock to buy $50k electric trucks the first time an EV dusts them in a stoplight to stoplight race, against their coal rolling brodozer. The catch is that they have to actually be able to afford a $50k truck, which ain't happening in the current economy.

You want to help people get away from fossil fuels sooner? It's easy. Reduce taxes as much as possible on everything, and get the government the hell out of the way.

And make sure the public in general knows what it takes to make those batteries amd electronic components.......

For a person who is demanding facts, I see none in your posts on the topic. Then again, it is easier to request nonsense, than provide information or support a position.
What position do I need to support with facts? In what post have I presented any position other than how long a saw ran straight gassed. Please enlighten?

I hope you are using your CALIFORNIA mandated electric chainsaw soon, And by the way, You do ride a bicycle to work right? I hope you don't go places on a Plane do you?
When everything you have is electric your "Rolling Blackouts" will be even more frequent than they are now. Most of your power is still made burning coal and natural gas too! Both fossil fuels! The sun goes down at night, And the wind doesn't blow 24-7.

Everytime I fill up at the gas station and see you clowns sitting there charging up your Tesla for 30 or 40 minutes, I laugh and think how much further I'm going to be up the road when you're done charging your green car that was powered up by electricity made from coal that we buy on the open market from Mexico. Yes that's right, We buy some of our electricity from Mexico.

ETA:

65% of mexico's power is made from fossil fuels, Power plants have been built near the US border to import power into the US.

The lithium in your prius and Tesla are mined with diesel powered heavy equipment, And the same diesel powered heavy equipment is going to dig the hole to throw your spent prius battery into the hole at Yucca mountain, But I'm not worried, I know you will be out front of the waste dump protesting:p

The lithium is also processed with coal fired power and charged with coal fired electricity….

the insanity is nuts….EVs failed the first time they were tried over 100 years ago for the same reasons it’s failing today…people want a more reliable form of transportation/energy….
