How many of us like and run Sachs Dolmars? Should we start up our own thread? I see a thread up on most other makes of chainsaws. I have a few Sach Dolmars in my collection and have enjoyed running them for production saws for 10-15 years. What say yea?

We're practically neighbors. You get our weather a lot. Usually a day or two later.

I have a 6401 I got at Hd last fall for$150 brand new! The chain was on backwards so the clerk said it wouldn't work right. Seriously!!I had been going in there bugging him for quite awhile. Maybe two yrs. Anyway I'm interested in putting on one of the BB kits to maybe build a work shed. The barn I usually work in is off limits right now because my parents are hassling. They're both in there 80's. But I saw this post and thought I'd answer this because I really love this saw! I'd also love to have a 5100.

Thanks for opening this discussion. These saws are very deserving of it. Take care. You're in a beautiful place.

I used to swordfish off The Banks.

Sachs Dolmar 112

hi. new to the thView attachment 192678View attachment 192679read, and i am a first time chainsaw buyer.

looking on craigslist, i came accross this:

Sach Dolmar 112 in good condition. Good 16" rollar tip bar - sharp 3/8" pich chain. Saw is anti vibration with adjustable automatic chain oiling. Very good performing older mid size saw. Starts, runs, cuts as new.
$65 or best offer.

after briefly talking to the guy i got the price down to $45, and he says it is 10 years old.

you guys think its a good buy? anything you suggest i ask the guy when i talk to him next? thanks all help appriciated.

chris

Just viewed the 166 pic's.
Here is what i think.
Muffler deflector missing, Manual oil pump
missing and impossible to find. Side grills
in cylinder cover missing also impossible to
find. This is a late production saw and should
have a chain brake. Clutch cover looks to have
been repaired "welded" at the upper dog mount.
I could be wrong on that, pic isn't to clear.
A 166 with a full wrap always demands more
than one with a half wrap.
It is most definatly not a $1200.00 saw.
So for those interested, Take all this into consideration.

Lee

After studying the pictures it looks to be a early model '82-'83ish because there is no decompression valve. A saw this age should have a hand guard and no chain brake. But it looks to have have a new late model 166 hood installed because there is no holes to bolt the hand guard to along with the air intake holes on the recoil side.

They really are very nice machines.

Check it out completely and make sure everything works as it should. Some parts are not easy to locate, but the saw is worth the effort.

thanks. ive been reading a little bit on this tread. they sound decent.

as a first time chainsaw buyer, what should i be looking for and asking when i check out the saw.

I am sure that others will contribute to this thread as well, but here goes ...

While not running:
- How sharp is the chain and how much life is left?
- How's the bar look, any 'edges' (burrs) on the sides?
- Is the bar straight?
- Is the drive sprocket worn?
- What is the overall appearance, does everything 'look and feel' as it should (all visible screws/nuts are there)?
- Any 'local engineering' been done (like using a padlock for a recoil pull)?
- How clean is it under the air cleaner cover?
- Pull off the muffler, any piston scoring?
- Is the engine warm?

While running:
- Does it start easily and accelerate smoothly?
- How does it cut?
- Does it cut straight?
- Any 'weird' vibrations?

Omt ...

... to remember is that you're getting a quality-made saw for $45.

That being said, not everyone who owns fine quality tools will take care of them the same way.

I would expect to need to spend a bit more $$ if I was going into the deal, but that's just how I am.

Good luck!

from the pics the bar looks good and straight, overall outward appearance looks clean and well maintained. he says it starts, runs and cuts as new. the chain he says is half worn out.

CL seller fail

a little bummed out. made a 2 1/2 hour trip for nothing. guy was selling a 112 that "starts, runs and cuts as new". spoke ove the phone a couple times and this saw sounded like it was in excellent condition.

when i got there we tested the saw on a log and it stalled on him. and he couldnt get it running again. he thought it may be the spark plug, he tried a couple new or good ones on it, fail. he checked if it was firing and it was, very well. his thoughts was it didnt seem like it was accepting any gas, so he opened up the saw and pour some in thru the inside, fail again. aside from that the cord was having issues recoiling back into place, after a pull he would have to give it 1 or 2 more tugs for the cord to go back in. the saw did look like it was well maintained, he was really baffled and embarassed of what had happened.

he seems like an honest guy, not a bs'er. he says hes been working on saws for some years and i asked him to give me a call if he can sort out the problem.

should i just forget about this saw and get somthing else, somthing easier to work with? i know nothing about saws, this was going to be my first purchase, so i wouldnt be able to fix it myself, id have to take it somwhere if somthing were to go wrong again. i understand these are very reliable saws and parts are hard to locate.

really wanted a sachs-dolmar after reading how good of a saw they are. if i do get it ($45) i would deffinately need somthing in writing that would garentee it would work without fail for a period of time. any input would be much appreiciated. thanks

I would want to peek at the piston and cylinder bf I dropped a dime on it. I am guessing the piston is scored.

I doubt you will get that unless you buy new.

thanks. i wasnt looking to spend more than $70 on a used saw, not a pro saw, just a mid size for use around the house. mostly limbing. i found a nice 14" poulan s25da that i aquired, and it seems to run great.

thinking i may need a 18" or 16", i have LOTS of apple trees that id be putting in quite a few hours cutting down and chopping up. maybe ill just wait and see if the s25da can handle the job.

there is a 18" homelite 10848 that i see for $60, light use and good working condition according to the seller. i may see if that is still available.

That saw is referred to as the Ronald McDonald Happymeal Special....I would stay far away from it.....there are several good saws in the classifieds from reputable sellers.

Looks like I got the 166 sold to someone in here. Now the question is what to buy? I would like a saw about 60-70ccs and about 20-24 inch bar. Any sugestions? $500 budget.

Glad someone from AS is getting the 166. Please start a new thread about what saw to buy, they always end up muddying up a good informative thread as everybody and their dog has a different preference for a saw and what is the best chain etc. This thread was started to be informative and concerning Sach Dolmar and Dolmar/Makita saws, not intended to to be taken over by a ," what`s the best saw to buy fandangle".

I thought that this one belonged here - SD 166 - PNW filter setup, full wrap, 60" bar and helper handle.

Chris.
