Being that I have shifted into timing my cuts and in general being more rednecky these days I want to know when do you begin to cut larger logs. Lets say I have a 346pp and a 10" log, is it fair to say that a 357pp will cut a 12" log about the same time.

I have a few larger saws comming in a 372 and a 385 does cutting a 12" log prove anything or should I step up to a 20" or larger log. Is cutting bigger wood proving anything or is the proof in the smaller log?
When we all meet at Dans for Muddy Water should we be cutting bigger logs for the bigger saws or is that what is done out west for ego reasons.
From seeing some of the pics from Oroville why the bigger logs? Is it harder to get a better time with the larger log?

Mark you have to remember out here the race is 3 cuts cold start, not one cut, so if you are cutting 12 inch , 3 cuts you cut more square inches of wood than one 20 inch cut, it would be nice if we had some big wood shows out here but that will not happen with the green peace guys here , they complain now if we use 20 inch wood in a show , we are killing all the old growth trees

it is harder to get your race saw to run 6 seconds wide open on a big log compare to 3 seconds on a smaller log so the bigger wood makes for a better race and shows who has a better motor

Stihlman doesn't have a problem running his saw that long in fact he likes it.

Dan can you get some bigger wood for the larger clubs.

Ed, that's when you say "Oh man, check out that poor whale!" while pointing over yonder and having your buddy shoot the water canon into the air on the other side of the hill.  Then you can skid the log out in peace while they go running to the rescue.

On the subject of size mattering, I wondered about your reported times from earlier today with the three saws if there wouldn't be any different tale told with a larger cut.  13 to 14 inches is pretty much limbing with any of those saws, ain't it?

Glen

out here most race shows use 12 inch wood plus i was using a 60 driver race chain so i can only cut 15 inch wood but i have been cutting some bigger firewood with the 7900 and no the out come would still be the same plus this saw is still new the others were not so it should still get better

So each saw spun the same chain loop in the test?  That's certainly reducing variables.

Thanks for doing that, by the way.

Glen

Marky, You should be practicing with the size of wood and the type of cut or cuts that you will cut at your next contest. If you want to practice switches, cut small wood and make multiple cuts, down up down. You can practice cold starting anywhere anytime with or without wood. Since in your area they cold start 3 cut 12" wood most of the time, thats what you should practice, with all of your saws. If you plan on coming out west, you better learn how to make a bore cut, but you've got plenty of time to learn that. LOL Dennis

Dennis i was going for that , i want to but a switch in there soon but they need to get the down cut right first, because the up cut is harder to do than the down cut .
what i mean is you can make up time or loose a lot of time in the up cut if you donot do it right and this is where the no push comes in to play

I just got done messing around with this saw and I don't think it is real fast but go head and take alook . I was praticing making cut's to and i dont think they are fast enough to play with the big boy's . If any of you saw racer guy's could give me a few tips i would be verey thankful... RoyB

Well if I can Narrow Dennis and his compadre I will be out at Oroville. Here's what I need to know what class are the saws and how big is the wood. I will need to have a club or 2 put together by then and a little practice on the cuts out there.
If Mr. Bafoon could post that or someone else that would be great.

I was also wondering if there will be any other AS members there? let me know. I got my radar up.

Ummm, speed up the camera?

Mighty sweet Roy! I don't think my woods 3120 by Dennis can touch that bad boy. Course I run it with a bit more bar....What kinda mods are in 'er?

I think that it would only be fair if royb and Dennis C had to use diesel fuel for there saw fuel, that way maybe us east coast idiots could see the light and feel like maybe very could be with in 10 seconds of them

sounds good to me how about you Gypo

Marky, just load up everything you have and throw it in your truck and head on out. You will need at least a 28" bar and maybe even a 32" and if you can't use a short bar on a big cut, get a 36" bar too! So that's 3 chains you need and if they have a stock saw chain race you will need another one. 4 chains, 3 bars, and a couple of new power heads[clubs] Now I know your coming out west just to have some fun, or just see some of your AS member friends. LOL Dennis

Dennis i need a 36 inch bar ? now where in the hell am i going to get a 36 inch bar that fits a 13 tooth gear , i guess i will have to phone buddy Dan Hicks and see
