Mills over here won't accept our logs, mostly because of metal fears.

same here, you need to go to the small mills that do specialty work.

a buddy of mine has a non-cdl log truck, and took and truck/trailer load to a mill. He got $450 for the load of oak and sugar maple.

He sells hardwood firewood for $300/cord delivered.

If we scan for metal, sometimes we can sell to the veneer mills and get 100-200/log, but that is net transport cost can kill you.

I bought my own sawmill for just this reason. I process and sell most of our tree job firewood. The good logs I saw on my own. We do have Amish mills right close that will do the job, so even if you don't have your own mill you can still get your yard trees sawed. The big mills? forget it.

I know a few guys who rough saw into cants and sell them for resaw to finish mills

Which is the big problem with getting a mill. Finding a market for your product. Some places it sells easilly. When I researched it here, people would take RGH random only if it was KD. The few who would take AD wated it at least S2S, then insist on gleaning the piles for for #1 stock while paying a buck a BF.

I had one sale lined up where the guy was going to buy a stack of red oak; RGH, Random, AD but when he got there he wanted to drill a hole in every board end and put a moisture meter in it

I am afraid I don't know your abreviations. Probably because I don't know anything about that side of the business. That's why I read this thread, thought I might pick something up.
