I must have bid on 20 different saws on Ebay in the past 3 months or so. I have not won a single one  . I always start low and submit a fair value bid near the close...if it has not already gone out of sight.

I am particularly amazed that 028s are going for way more than $200 if in nice cosmetic condition. They are very nice pro quality saws but WOW! :dizzy:
They are about 10 to 15 years old...you can buy a new MS280 or Husky 455 with warrantee for way less than twice the price of a "pig in the poke".

Yep, I have followed several saws over the last couple of weeks and can not believe some of the bids being put in. Some have gone for double and more what they are really worth, additionnaly you are gambling on what you will really be getting as far as soundness, durability and reliabilty. If you end up having to pump $200.00 to $300.00 in repairs you have an old repaired saw at new saw pricing with no warranty etc.

I am just po folks and can not afford to buy some of these used units at such crazy pricing. I guess I will continue to purchase new stuff instead and feel lots better about it.

Its firewood and hurricane season and newbies are bidding them out of their mind. It will be this way till Spring, if last year was any indication. But as Bob has done above, if you are very careful and make a last 'second' bid; you can still get one now and then. I saw a Stihl 16" bar go earlier today for more than the local Stihl dealer charges. The guy that won it had made over 10 bids in the past two days; he wanted it and he got it. His ebay bid record was (1) so you know he was a newbie and had no idea what he was doing.

Saws on e-bay

Cool!! I just sold a Pioneer 1110 on e-bay for $40 usd i just tossed it out there and two guys fought over it for awhile i never expected to get that for it. The saw works great, i won't sell s"**t it was clean and painted up. No one can predict how long these old gals will spin the chain but they have lasted for 30+ yrs so far, its the first time i have ever listed anything on e-bay, i have bid on a few saws myself but was quickly out-bid by other folks that have more money than sense of real monetary value but i guess it takes all kinds, no wonder e-bay is so profitable for the owners.

That may not be a bad thing. You used to be able to get a good deal on ebay, but not anymore. I haven't bought or even bid on a saw on ebay for over a year. I'm tired of dealing with a saw showing up and being far and away dissimilar than how it was advertised. I'd say you're better off buying one in a pawn shop or at a yard sale. You may not have the selection, but you can see what you're buying.

Bullhooey. I just got a pristine looking 372 for $365, and an almost new 192T for $223....I know what I want to pay, don't look for saws that go for top dollar like many Stihl's, and always bid in the last 30 seconds, sometimes using a snipe service. I'm ruthless and could care less, i don't know the other bidders. I've scored oodles of great stuff, at plenty good prices. I missed a parts 2100 for $65 cause i was busy and forgot, that had most of the parts needed for mine that i dont use but may build soemday to full race status-- a bud scavenged the parts...

I just won this saw on ebay it is a echo cst 610 twin cylinder saw in john deere colors

It took me a long time to find that 610 MacDaddy. I still can't believe I was able to bring my self to sell it off. That darn bracket for the handle just drove me out of my mind, I hope you can find one that fits just right, maybe even yellow!!

With all of the threads going on about saws on ebay I've just been waiting to see one of mine  I'm happy it was this one though, what a cool saw.

I was following that JD, but it got too rich for my comfort zone. I agree with both Jeff and PBTree. There are crap saws on eBayware, and there are some bargains. The only time that I was truly POd was on a 3 saw package deal where the seller neglected to mention that the saws had been sitting outside for at least a couple of years. But I've been able to use some of the parts, so it worked out okay.

I agree with the rest of you guys on this. Some people have more money than sense! Myself, I have only bought one saw off of ebay, but have bid on several others. If I can't get them for what I call "garage sale" prices I guess I don't need them. A person can find collectors saws all over the place not just ebay and for less that 50 bucks most of the time. The majority of the people who have these either don't know what they have or just don't care. Some are even grateful because you ridding them of junk. :dizzy:

"Bid High and Bid Early" rarely works any more as you are competing with sniping. I gave up a year ago and went over to one. I win all my stuff now (90%) by using www.auctionsiper.com. My bid get's placed about 10 seconds before the end of the auction. This way I don't show my hand, and don't get bid up or beaten by $1... If you can't beat them, join them....

I noticed JJ was bidding on it but I did not see how it ended. There is a JD 2cyl just south of me but he will not part with it.

 I've been burned a few times on ebay saws in the past, and won't do it again. I'll only buy on ebay from reputable stores (Bailey's for example), or the people I actually know and have talked to on the phone (Dean, for example). I might buy a parts saw, but my full-on ebay saw shoppin' days are over. I'm not gonna buy another saw unless I can pick it up, start it, and at least hear it run.

I was on the last 6 hours of an auction, lookin' at an 046 recently, and I got ahold of Jeff (fishhuntcutwood), and he pointed out some things that I didn't even see about the saw and seller. So I did not buy (Thanks Jeff!). I'm not sayin' there aren't deals to be had, and a few diamonds in the ruff. But I'll let someone else find the deals.

Glad you didn't get burned Gary. Have you found a saw yet? I might know where there's an 046 sitting. I can stop by and check it out if you like.
