Hello from the Scottish Highlands.
I've been lurking on here for a few days picking up all the info on splitters and now it's time to show mine I think.
It uses a JCB ram driven by a JCB hydraulic pump off the PTO of my old paraffin Ferguson and if necessary I just lower it to the ground to put a heavy log on then lift it up again.
I find this a very easy way to work and I'm now looking at building a trailer version.
There isn't a great choice of splitters in the UK, I could buy a 30t PowerTek for $3900 or a 20t Ramsplitter (using cheaper components) for $2650. The big problem I see with commercial units, and it has been mentioned by others , is the limited space for working when the unit is horizontal, then bending down struggling with heavy rounds in the vertical position.
I reckon I could build a good heavy trailed version model of the one I have using a Honda GX270 9hp motor, barnes 16gpm pump, new hyd.oil tank, etc for just over $2000, I already have steel, wheels (750x16), .75 tonne suspension units and a few more bits.
Like others on here I just quarter really big rounds with the saw.
In the end there is never going to be a universal "best" splitter as every man has a different opinion and different ways of working.

Hello and welcome to AS! That's a pretty cool splitter you got there too. I don't think I have seen that type of splitter before running off a PTO. It's chain driven and not hydraulic?

I especially appreciate the beer keg sitting under the whole contraption!

Makes for nice refreshments when it's hot out, eh?

Is that attached or do you place it under the load when setting up?

Hot out ,, damn that the Highlands, never gets hot!! :monkey:

Great Post

Man that's one cool project. Could you post more pics? Is the chain drive increasing the RPM of the pump? I own a Gas TE20 so I know what the beer keg is for. Can you guess what the RPM of the pump is and its GPM? I have a pto hydraulic pump and an old cyl......maybe in the spring...

Trial, I like your adaptation & using an engine you already have instead of getting a splitter engine that you have to maintain. Good Job! Anyway, i'm sorry but Mike Meyers has made a permanent dent in my perception..........."If it's not Scottish....it's Crap!

Huh...first time I saw one like that. As long as it saves you splitting by hand ...it's all good.
