Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

Last 2 1/2 truck loads from my new best friend's best friend.

But he has a few more trees to take down, so I'm figuring on more later. He has been helping to load the truck each time and we actually have had pleasant conversations. Even found we have a few mutual acquaintances.

And this morning I received a text from an unknown number - someone said their father in law gave them my contact info as someone who hauled firewood away. The problem is he didn't say who that was! Anyway, I texted back and stopped while I was out to have a look. Turns out I haven't gotten any firewood from his FIL in over 3 years. I told him (my old new best friend's best son in law) that I would be happy to take it if he cut it into manageable sizes. We'll see how motivated he is. I have enough projects and enough wood to process that I'm not cleaning up anyone else's mess. I don't mind helping out to cut some if needed or for someone not capable or if it's super premium with easy access. But young guys can at least make it easy for me if they want me to haul it for free.

I had to take the muffler off the back of the seat got hot .

Had one of those when I was a kid. Used to reach back and override the governor. Till I grabbed the plug wire by mistake.

Didn't stop me, but sure made me more careful!

Got about a cord from the downed branches.
My lovely bride, 4 days out of carpel tunnel surgery.

We're done with this one. My racks are beyond full and prime, cool, fall cutting season hasn't even started!

Nice haul, and nice hauler, the one with the wheels and the other one lol.
When I work on others rides, I've had them hold spark plug wires for me, but I make sure they are clear when I turn it over . I figured the least I can do is to educate them on how a vehicles electrical systems work .

I've sure had some interesting conversations with folks over how much free work they will get in return for a couple ricks of wood that I have to cut and load. I don't mind earning it so to speak, but some folks are nuts.

My typical deal is that I take everything down to 3". Cut the stump as close as I reasonably can. Pile the brush ( but not across the other side of the property)

That seems to be a happy middle with most folks but I sure learned to get the details hammered out first!

I have certainly got smarter about finding easy access wood. I haven't winched anything up the side of a ravine for years. The trick is staying well ahead so you can cherry pick!

yesterday, we was stopped at the X bit before my street. 2-way stop. waiting for traffic to turn, the i could cross. and behind the one before the one turning was a not rice rocket with a imo... not long for this world rider!... and all of a sudden... around the car in front of him... in a loud explosion of noise... i looked up.... as he clutched and screamed into those gears... front wheel carried all the way!!....

Been there done that, and have the scars to show what happens when it doesn't go the way you planned . That's one of the main reasons I don't have a bike on the road, every noticed track bike, and crack pipe sound very similar, well so are the effects . I have the need, the need for speed, just not the pocketbook to be able to afford a habit like that

If I had more room here I could take more of the easy gimmies, but it piles up quickly once you get a bit ahead. It's like a law of attraction or something, man with piles of wood on his property draws people to ask if you want more wood, works for me .

Officially no big block Formula S convertibles were made in 67. But two 67's with that package have been found. Officially 68 was the first and last year the Big Block Formula S, convertible was offered. They made 64 of them, 24 automatics and 40 4 speeds. In 69 1/2 they started putting 440's in them, but zero were put in Formula S convertibles. The 'Cuda name was first used in the 69 1/2 models, but none were put in convertibles.

Urban legend said, and I repeat it with no knowledge of truth, just because it sounds cool. With out a roof for structural integrity, the big blocks produced enough torque to twist the bodies so bad the windshields would pop out. There should be pics in the readers rides forum. The car has yet to be restored.

I believe that twisted body story to be rightly true. A kid that I went to trade school with had a 70 - 71 Cuda with a built 440 in it. I met him a few years later at Epping, NH Drag Strip. I was in the pit and ran into him with his car. I noticed that both rear quarters were slightly buckled right at the rear windows. One side was in and the other side was out. He said the motor was too powerful for the unibody and twisted the car up. He had modified the car severely after the fact with frame connectors and a full roll cage.

I think it's regional. So many burn around here, it's not to hard to find someone who will come after decent wood. I've charged folks before but only if it was trash wood and a pain to get to. They fuss sometimes but I just explain that it's trash wood I don't want and I can get all the hardwood I want with easy access. I see those as more of a landscape job. Most folks that would have someone do that for them don't have a clue why you wouldn't want certain wood species. To them wood is wood.

Lol some funny stuff there. Maybe the twig sellers are trying to target the rocket stove folks. I get a lot of the same things you get on calls about trees. I could cut every day in a few huge housing additions with million dollar homes but I prefer to find folks that make 75k a year or less. Usually much easier to work with.
I do a fair bit with farmers also. They let me know where stuff is and I get what I want when I want but always offer to do a rush job here and there for them when a tree is keeping them from making progress. It's good for both of us. Often times they tell me to take what I want and leave. They push the brush to the tree line with their equipment of choice. Pretty easy stuff. Flat fields, don't have to touch the brush.

Sad part is around here there's lot of people with a few acres of woods, just dying off. Lots of oak and ash standing dead. Seems most can't be bothered by it to boot, nor will they allow someone in to clean it all up. Sad really. For one the health of the woods and second it's a lot of good burn wood rotting away.

I cut Mountain Ash every year , love it clean burning & hot . No ash borer out breaks up North here ..yet !

Interesting, maybe it's the drivers. I have gotten behind them and they seem to accelerate pretty hard and they cruise at 60-65 going between jobs with the plows on. I was just looking at the lie-ometer mpg so probably not completely accurate. The 7.3s seem like some real gas drinkers, they have good power though.

Had a 7.3 Nav star in my previous 1990 F-250 . Lots of highway miles back & forth from hunting & fishing camps , pulling 18' Wells-fargo enclosed Side by hauler . Great torque , poor fuel economy 15 mpg . Imp. was the best . My Dodge 2500 5.9 Cummins is significantly better fuel wise .

So the trees laying on the ground somehow affected the ash borer ?? Or not, Other than the standing trees .?. I don't get it. The part of no-one is allowed to touch them or use them for fuel wood I get, cause it's the state.. Bunch of ***holes making the decisions. The borer seemed to have no trouble traveling anywhere without the gooberments assistance

I don't know the reasons, they seldom make sense to me. I have a few hundred acres of designated state game land not far from my place and it's anyone's guess as to why they do things. The dcnr usually is much better at managing state forests then thr game commission.

Yep, it was one of my favorite trees to burn, amd we have plenty of good hardwoods to choose from. Burns great amd drys fast. That's long since gone now, standing dead, half rotten on the stump is the norm now. Hopefully they make a comeback with new growth.

Little stumped on my Tacoma . I put a new charcoal canister and gas cap as they failed the smoke test . Reset the computer and have driven the car over the last 6 days 450 miles . Computer is still not ready to test . No codes but what the hell .

Also made up one of the two flanges needed to move the pipe on the tin Lizzy . Have to add about 4 inches of pipe to get it up and away from the seat back I’m thinking on just using some sheet aluminum to make the gasket
