Chipper, it amazes me how fast common sense has eroded in this Country!

The only explanation I can come up with is the increased drug use in conjunction with a cult of "self-brainwashing" (people surrounding themselves with others who think exactly the same). I'm also starting to suspect there may be subliminal messages in some news media. People I have known for decades seem to have changed on a dime!

When you realize how much this has infiltrated our education system, it is truly scary! There was some of it when I went to school, but the teachers did not have the same power. I remember my comments caused a teacher to storm out of the room, say "class dismissed" and slammed the door on his way out (it was only 1/2 hour into an hour class). I'm sure my "grade" suffered, but I did not fail the course, and most of the other students were "gleeful" that I stood up to him.

The Fine Arts teacher (teaching Accounting students) was a screwball! He was into classical music and modern art and wanted us to appreciate the same (which I found to be a contradiction). He wanted us to go to the museum and "meet a painting" (it had to be modern art). Then, he wanted us to "visit" the painting several times to get to know it better, then select a piece of classical music and write a 5-page report on how the painting related to the music. When he asked if we had any questions, I raised my hand and said: "you're kidding ... right?"

When my grandsons were in elementary school (a religious school) they had "banned" words, including "shoot". Did not matter the context. So, if I took my grandsons to shoot the bow and arrow, they were not allowed to speak of it. I was outraged, and was going to schedule a meeting with them, but my daughter begged me not to, so I didn't. My plan was to go in there and tell them I was going to have a book burning over the WE because there were some versions of the Bible I did not like and ask them if they wanted to participate. I think it would have got their attention, but there may have been retaliation against the kids, so I backed off.

I still can't find the deer in the woods?
Were there any outbreaks of EHD in your area? That will eliminate pockets of them fast.

I had to change were I hunt in Brewster because of it. Where I got my large doe this year is about 5 miles from where I have hunted over the last few decades.

A couple years ago a friend dropped off 3 20" bars from his 039. He gave the power head to someone else, who didn't want the burnt up bars. Tips were purple from running dull chains, oil set on low, etc. I saved the one good bar and put it on my 290, changed the sprocket to 3/8, opened up the exhaust a little. Bugger just runs way over it's pay grade. A while back the 290 started acting up. It would be revving great, cutting like mad, and die for a split second, like some one flipped the switch on and off real fast. Instantly it would be back at wide WOT. My wife bought me an MS 251 for our anniversary, so I've been using it for my 18" and under wood. A big storm blew down 20 or so of my 24"-30" White Oaks, so I've been using the old 290 more. It got to the point it was "cutting off" a couple times an hour. I took it in to my shop and he pulled the cover off, took one finger and poked the plug wire, it was loose. The air filter kept the wire pushed down on the plug enough it couldn't come all the way off, but occasionally loose contact. Well, that was a cheap fix. I threw that bar away and was going to buy a new one. Then got to thinking, I have a brand new 25" bar for the 660 I never use, with a brand new chain. I'm going to stick it on the 290 and see how it does. If I just cut the normal stuff I use the 290 for, and don't lean on it, which I never do because my chains are always sharp, I don't see where the saw knows the difference? I'll let you know how it does. No, I'm not trying the 36" next week.
So it was the spark plug boot not making full contact on the 290 and not the used 20" bar? My 038 has been acting similarly lately.

Winter showed up. Winds are fairly vicious and lake effect snow expected for a couple days. First time I have started the tractor since I took the mowing deck off and put the blower on!
Finished my session for the day. The blower would have made all areas without concrete go a lot quicker. Next month we'll get rain lol.

Is the brake capable of being repaired, or is it a saw with no brake for the rest of it's days? One of the things I like about STIHLS is. Usually the brake handle itself breaks before the mounts or fasteners. I use my brake all the time. I would feel really uncomfortable running a power saw without one. I know folks did for years and years, but that was before my time on a saw. For me, it's a must. šŸ‘
i see skateboards now have brakes! well, can buy with one or retrofit.

On more than one occasion, I've had a similar problem when the screw cap on the end of the spark plug comes off causing unreliable spark. Other times there may be some corrosion in there and spraying it will help.

Always check the simple things first.
KISS!

Yes, it was the plug boot. I got this 290 shortly after they stopped the "0's" at the beginning of the models, so it's pretty old. My mechanic said the reason he went straight to the plug was just a couple weeks ago someone else brought an old 290 in and it took him a while to find it. When I told my BIL he said same thing happened to him. When you push the boot on it feels like it locks on? Take the top off and push the boot on and see if that helps? Mines running great again.

I was just joking about the deer, because I saw woods with no deer. But, my neighbor in WV said they had several farms within 10-20 miles that had bad break outs. In Frederick County, MD where I live, we have had no signs. I have just over 1 acre and I counted 30 deer in my back yard, so they were crammed into about half an acre. My daughter sent me this pic right at 12, she was eating lunch on the front porch. Pic was taken back in warm weather.

A little dab of red locktite on the terminal screw will stop that.
