We got 3 days of good sap then it got too warm.Looks like it’s going to be a disappointing maple syrup season. Buckets are bone dry I’m usually on the second boil by now with a few gallons canned . If it warms up to fast the buds will pop on the trees and the season will be over
It's up in the 40s today after a couple weeks of frigid below zero temps. It feels good to be back out cleaning up this property!

Now I got another bent over hunk in the wedge. Glad I missed it with the saw, although I threw a chain earlier. Which took out a few of the drivers. That went on the "needs fixed" pile. After yesterday's date with the toilet, I'm starting to think I should stop before I break anything else today.

Do you have any box elder or silver maple trees? Could tap them a see if they run. They always run a little before the sugar maple.
Yea our weather looks the same. I didn't tap this year and unless we get a change I doubt I will. Feel sorry for my friend he went big time last winter bought a huge commercial evaporator and built a sugaring shed . Last year he produced about a hundred + gallons. Doubt he’ll be even half that this year .Yea our weather looks the same. I didn't tap this year and unless we get a change I doubt I will. Next weekend has some chances, wait and see
Mine is a 3800. Lives outside, no place to store it. But with an O'Reilly battery it turns over in the cold no problem, Kubota battery was small so I had to put in a heated dip stick. Might have the ice gone by this weekend with the warm days coming in.I scraped off all the most recent snow yesterday morning(looked about like yours) knowing we were going to be getting full sun, 90% of it was dry by the end of the day, now about 95% is dry. Because we are in the river valley, all the cold air off the snow comes downhill to our place and turns any moisture back into ice soon as the sun goes below the trees(which is quite early).
What model Kubota is that. Mine are snuggling in my wife parking spot in the barn, either of them has more value than the most valuable two vehicles, so they sleep inside whenever possible. There is plenty of space in main bay of the barn for them and a couple cars, but I have it warmed up to 52 in there and I figured I's just leave the door shut.
Even though its supposed to be warming up above freezing, we still have a ways to go before the white stuff is gone here.

Looks great. Also, standard seasoned cast iron is not the best cookware for slow cooking of acidic foods like chili so we will give you a pass this time9 point chili. All homegrown stuff. Peppers and onions and maters except the beans. Sorry not cast iron for you aficionados.

All 7 of the trees we tapped last year were 3.5-4%. I won’t have time to make syrup this year though. I was curious to see if they were that high this year as well.Have one silver and a black maple tapped . Nothin
The sugar maples I tap are the best producers I have found on the property . I don’t tap all of them because a few don’t produce much sap for some reason . The ones I tap have had consistently high sugar content sometimes around 4% . So it takes less sap to make a gallon of syrup
