It's warm enough here that I'm only burning one fire a day. That means ugly wood...I really dislike the way winters have been the last few years. 30s and 40s in December and January, 2-4 weeks of real cold, teens and below, in February and then, bang, up to the 40s and 50s in a couple days. There seems to be no more gradual temperature transitions.

We hit 60* yesterday and probably again today. Junk silver maple in the shop stove to take the chill off.

If the piston tube diameter is larger than the original the out time will be a little bit longer but your splitting force will be higher. That is because it will take more hydraulic oil to fill the tube up. Your retract time will be quicker because the piston rod is larger in diameter and will require less fluid to fill the front end of the tube.


Why they stopped letting people into scrapyards was due to insurance regulations. I was a frequent visitor at 2 scapyards near me back in the 1980's. All of a sudden the "no public admittance due to insurance regulations" signs went up. Of course this is stupid Taxachusetts.

The splitter has a 5" cylinder on it now, pushing force won't be any different. The rod is just 1.5" though, I was really surprised how quickly it bent, considering I left off the stick as soon as I saw it start to twist. The new cylinder should retract quite a bit faster. Supposed to show up today, I'll have to locate some heavy walled tubing to accommodate the 2.375" step down in the rod for the push plate. Which, so far, has been a bear to find someone local that has any in stock, or would bore the I'd out for me. Times like this I severely miss having a machine shop at my disposal.
Insurance reasons would make the most sense, I guess. Still bums me out. I used to have such a good time digging through the piles and finding gems in the trash. Got a lot of good stuff over the years.

You got me on this yesterday, but I did a double take on it when someone replied: Gran Torino. LOL, and I'm not even a Ford guy! I know what you mean on movie and feeling though. FYI - I had a boss one time that lived a mirror image to that only with Mopars, not Fords. Almost scary how close the movie portrayed his life.

Oh yeah, I would not do well in an HOA and I never have to worry about being in one now.

After closer inspection there is also a torx driver in the center of the bolts. I was able to use a standard size Allen wrench to get them out. I didn't have a Torx driver that long to get in the hole. This saw I bought for $50 today. The guy said that the pull start was messing up. It wasn't the pull start. Something was stopping the crank from rotating. I pulled the motor apart and found a semi sticking top ring. It was sticking on the exhaust side and all the way in. The ring on the front, where the gap is, was catching on the intake opening on the up stroke but not on every revolution. The ring groove was carboned up and the (blank owner) was running the saw without an air filter. The transfers in the piston were full of fines and oil. Can you say stupid. I cleaned the ring grooves and the motor spins freely now. The piston and cylinder are in excellent condition with no scoring. I ordered new rings, air filter and crank seals for it. The parts will be in on Friday.

Everyone who works on Stihl saws has a T-27 T wrench!

I hate clamshells, and will ONLY work on 440s, 460s, 461s, and 660s. No desire to get involved with the homeowner saws, or the more complicated newer ones.

I'll stick to my "wheelhouse"!

I am going to pretend reading "HOA" is not getting me all spun up as I have stuff to focus on and get done today lol. I have never had to deal with them but watching the fields around me succumb to cookie cutter townhouse and single family HOA style developments really dampers this guys spirit. We just watched as this historic farm established in 1748 was razed earlier this month due to county over reach and developers chasing the all mighty dollar and commercial zoning. The log cabin that was inside the early 1800s expansion that you see there now may have been the oldest house in the county.

One of the guys I work with, had the chance to get rid of the hoa in his development. There was a clause after 10 years to disband it, when the time came his neighbors voted to keep it. He's been talking about moving somewhere else after his son graduates just to get away from the hoa.

From past experience I know that Wisconsin maple syrup and cheese goes over very well at the Iowa GTG's I've gone to in the past but I'll have to remember to bring 15 pounds of cheese curds as with 10 pounds we almost ran out last time.
