I caught my neighbor doing that to a similar MTD splitter. He had borrowed it from a friend to split up a big silver maple.
Upon seeing his 'method', I politely informed him that there was a latch to unlock the cylinder/beam, to swing it to the vertical position, for splitting those big rounds.
He didn't know what I was talking about at first, but figured it out after I explained it to him. Then he said that that would have made it far easier to split the number of rounds he had already tried. Said the engine kept stalling out when he tried it earlier.

About a month later, he asked if he could borrow my DHT 22 ton splitter (his friend needed the MTD splitter back). Ummm. I told him I'd pull my splitter over, and help him split the rest of the wood on the next nice weekend.
And that's exactly what we did.

Great guy though. Just didn't know **** about wood splitters.

Uhh Al, did you see the CL Poster's pic of HIS splitter "set up" for Vertical Splitting?

He didn't unlatch the beam, the tires were in the air, and that had the engine 90 degrees from "upright ":surprised3::eek::omg::crazy2::laughing::angry::happybanana:

Here ya go Al, THIS is why guys are commenting on HIS splitter being used VERITICALLY , yep it IS Capable of Vertical Operation, but I don't think that this the manufacturer's Recommended method of Vertical Operation.

Shouldn't bother the Hydraulics any, but I imagine it isn't any too stable, and well that is probably a Less than "Healthy " position to run the engine in;)

I don’t think it ever worked that way, but for the sake of a mind game:
1. would a splash lube engine survive that? I’m thinking it would move oil all around and maybe work. Flood the cylinder wall, probably burn oil.
Edit: looks like cylinder might be pinted up on the engine.

2. Probably a float carb that would not work, at least not long.

3. Hydr looks like it would suck air and not move at all. return is on top, but I can’t see the suction connection. If it was bottom, it would work, at least until it aerated so bad.

If that was my splitter there'd be a giant puddle under it with a combination of all the fluids it has in it...I'm thinking that it's drained and maybe gets stored like it is in the photo?

I'm betting he thought that pic was gonna garner intrest in his splitter and be a little bit of a joke...until a flood of emails came in calling him a ******* for standing that thing up like that.

There's no way anybody is really that stupid...is there?

I'm not buying any storage story. He would have said it in the post and not removed the photo.

I refer you to post #23. Stupid is maybe too strong - like Ash_403 said, the guy was a great guy, just didn't understand splitters. We've all been there and done something wrong because we didn't know any better. And when you know better you can do better.
