Also..here is a MS Paint rendering of the saw.. ----> .

It is a little small, but it is really detailed. :hmm3grin2orange:

OK, I'll throw you a bone or two. First off I would try and adjust the low speed screw, it may be as simple as it is set to rich and wont idle because of that. Second, I have been taught to NEVER use any version of silicone type sealant on the intake side of a small engine, any of that ealre breaks off it can/will clog one of the jets in the carb, or worse. If the gasket is bad, REPLACE it, don't monkey with it!!!!

There's two gaskets on the inlet block. Depending on the model of carb, there are two spacers that lock the carb into position on the studs. These often get left off and the carb doesn't align with the impulse hole. Gasket gets shredded also...

The gaskets are supposed to be mounted dry. If you try to repair them, I like Hylomar HPF... Specifically designed for this purpose.

I turned the needle all the way out almost. And it did run richer, but not enough to get the revs down, even with the throttle plate 100% sealed off closed.

Im just curious how the permatex will get to the jets. All that comes through the jet is fuel from the metering part of the carb. Also, the sealant would be after the carb entirely.

If it is bad, it will be replaced...I said that. But Ive had motors that the gaskets looked great, but only ran perfectly, after putting a think coat of sealant on the mounting surfaces. Most recently a Honda GCV160 on a push mower.

Thanks!

The carb has the pump underneath, fuel line goes in on the lower right side. I saw numbers on the carb...but didnt really hunt for a name...possibly Walbro or Tillotson? I really dont know. But I can find out.

Where can I find this Hylomar HPF? Is it something NAPA would carry? I usually get my sealers and such from them.

Got some Marine Grade Silicone Sealant, RTV silocone, black sealant?, the permatex gasket maker (#1 I beleive) and the Copper gasket sealer.

I spent too much time trying to get mounting surfaces perfectly flat with a file on my older 4 stroke engines..and while it is the right way to do stuff, the sealers eliminate all leaks, in most cases, unless you are seriously warped...lol

Because everything in the carb is constantly exposed to fuel and fuel will break down permetex. I don't care how carefull you are, but you will always put on to much and it will get everywhere once it gets anywhere in the carb!!! Permetex turns into a stingy mush once it has been exposed to fuel long enough.

I understand, but how will it get in the carb?

If there is a stihl in your garage, you better hurry up and toss it or all the male cheerleaders will start to show up. Oops, to late they are already here and posting. :hmm3grin2orange:
Is is this what the saw looks like?

Yup, thats it, except Ithink this one has a chain brake...

Ill go out and take a peak.

Just brought the Christmas tree home..so I got to do some pruning..Is a 20" bar considered overkill for little 1/4" branches?:dizzy:

Yup, it has a metal tag riveted on the bar oiler side, and it says "STIHL-08 S" electronic quickstop.

So it has a chain brake. And the sidecover is different where that one has painted raised letter, and this one has it on a tag.

It will work fine - grind off the rackers and use full skip .404:hmm3grin2orange:

Now look at my Avatar, I think a 32" would be a wise choice trimming. :biggrinbounce2:

So a 60" Bar, .404 Full Skip, on an 066 would be just enough to cut a little 2" section of the trunk off...

THe number to the right of the muffler, inside of the clutch cover, reads "117001021"

It will be a Tillotson carb. Brutally simple... and easy to overhaul as there are no hidden passages. The screen in right under the intake tube.

HPF is now made/marketed by permatex. It was invented by Rolls-Royce in the 50's.

I'd stay away from the silicone stuff for the carb gaskets... makes a slippery mess and if you get it in the impulse hole of the inlet block or carb you are toast.

This might help...

It's made in Germany... Early 90's... most likely for export to South america or Asia... Nice... Most I see are from the 60's/ 70's!
