Well, Id start with the easiest things first. Make sure the mounting bolts are tight, then crank it, and spray some WD40 around the carb mounts. If the engine speed or it smokes more, I know where at least 1 leak is, never assume the first leak, is the ONLY leak. Ill also spray some around the throttle plate shafts, and look for a reaction.
At that point Ill take the carb off, look at the gasket, if it is torn, Ill make a new one, if not, Ill make sure both surfaces are smooth, and free of defects/old gasket. Then apply a thin film of the Permatex Gasket sealer, making sure not to use too much, as it could be sucked into the intake.
Then let it sit a few minutes, then assemble.
Now crank it and see how it runs. If it idles properly, and I get good response with both adjustment screws, I will assume it is working porperly, then tune it in.
If it is still not idling porperly, Ill look at the lower crank case half bolts, check THAT gasket for leaks, if I find some, Ill order a new gasket, as a sealer should not be used in such a critical area.
If I find no leaks, Ill assess the crankshaft seals, and if they appear worn, Ill replace them.
If the lower case half gasket looks good, the carb is sealed up, and the seals look good, but it still wont idle..Heck. I dont know. Have to be a carb problem, but the fact it runs so good after it starts, just lean, and it doesnt choke well, makes me think air leak. Also, it is getting plenty of fuel, line is fresh, and pliable, gas tank vent is missing....so I know that isnt a problem.
Jeez..Gimme a 22hp Fuel injected, Water Cooled Kawasaki...those are easier to work on then some of the saws made today.lol
