I was looking at the buy and sell and noticed we now have a Dolmar dealer in town.

So I phoned him up to get a price on a 5100s. First I got the guy on the phone who told me that they don't have a 5100s model. Hmmm...Then I got to speak to the owner who told me they picked up the dealership 3 months ago. Now he kept referring to the PS5100s as a high revving saw that I may not be as happy with it as one of the other models as they have more torque.

A Dolmar 5100s is $499+tax Canadian for the basic unit no extras. A Stihl MS260pro is $599+tax with case, extra chain and a hat. So figure about $75.00 cnd in extras, so my question seems to be where is this huge savings in prices with the Dolmar 5100s? Now he will dicker a bit but he said he would have to phone his distributer first before giving me a final price as he doesn't stock them.

Now I do not NEED another chainsaw, BUT I have some extra cash ($500cnd) that is burning a hole in my pocket and I seem to WANT another chain saw.

So back to the Dolmar dealer, he has PS460 which he will sell for $365/$415 taxes in (14% Taxes here), PS540 for $416/$475 taxes in.

I am also considering buying a MS361($749/853 Taxes In) and selling my MS260pro to keep within my $500 budget.

So thoughts on the Dolmar PS460 for $365? Seems reasonably priced for a metal cased saw?

Anyone have one of these? I also may just buy an MS180 to have a lighter saw.

Decisions, Decisions..

Dont bother with other dolmars than 5100/7900...

And the huge savings with dolmars you are talking 'bout is that 5100 is much more of saw than other saws in its range, and cheaper too...

I wouldnt say their other saws are junk and to not look at them. The 460 and 510 are on the same frame as the 5100 and they are nice machines!

See what he can do on the 5100 for you.

Ok I spent some time pricing huskies and Stihl this afternoon.

Stihl has recently stopped its free case, chain, hat and combo deal and some dealers will stihl honour it and some will not. They have also raised the prices on the MS361 from cnd$749 to $799

Husky for a 137 they want cnd$299/340taxes, for a husk340 they want cnd$429/489taxes in

Stihl MS170/case/chain cnd$279/318taxes, They have specials on ms230 cnd$329/375 taxes (which makes it the same price as the MS180) and on a MS390 cnd$499/$568

Now Seems to me that the Husky is more expensive than the Stihl here!

Now the Dolmar ps460 seems like a more solid saw than the Stihl MS230 and Husky 340.

I am now more undecided and maybe that is a good thing seeing as this is a WANT and not a NEED.

well, if you want a huskie you should be looking at 350 and up, since those are true huskies, the models below them arent real huskies...

But, if you want a strong 50cc saw for all around jobs get 5100...

I believe the ps 460,ps 510 are updates on the 540,maybe a Dolmar guru can confirm this.
if that is indeed the case they should be robust and dependable saws, that 540 sure is.
the 540 just isn't a screamer like the 5100,but I think the 460,510 will make a great personal use/firewood saws.

No offense, but if he doesn't stock the 5100...perhaps you really don't have a Dolmar dealer yet? That's like going into a Ford dealership and the sales manager telling you he doesn't stock Mustangs.

He just got them in and the 5100 is a higher priced 50cc model. Not all dealers can push those. His Rep. may not be the best either and doesnt know much.

Our rep. has been in many times for other stuff he sells and NEVER mentioned Dolmar to us.

What are they then? Who makes them?

That isnt true! The 345 and the 340 are below and are made in Sweden.

I think what he is trying to say is that the 137 and the 142 are built on a Poulan frame, there are differences from the Husky version and the Poulan version though. Not sure exactly what they all are.

I know that they are:laugh: I just wanted to hear a more entertaining version of the story.

The 340, 345, 350 are all part of the same family. The 350 differers slightly because it has a bolt on cylinder instead of being part of the crankcase. None of these three saws are considered to be professional saws.

The 137 and 142 are also Husqvarna built. They both have a 3 piece crankshaft, Low Vibe system, Air Injection, and an unfortunate Poulan feel.

The 460 and 510 share the same frame..It is aluminum and about a pound heavier than the 5100, and actually looks the same as the 5100, but the 5100 uses a mag case for some weight savings. I have been told you can put a 5100 top end on a 510 or 460, but haven't verified that myself...

The 510 is a great little saw, just really heavy for its size and power compared to the 5100... Can't comment on the 460, as i have never ran one.

540 is a totally differant machine...

Now I am confused,,, :dizzy:  :dizzy: just go get a Freakin saw for crying out loud :buttkick: :buttkick: Spend that Hot A$$ed money and get it out of your pocket,,,, Your selling one of your babies to get another one????? Whew!!!!! I'm wore out

Dolmar 510

The 510 and 460 are respectable saws and they balance well so the weight savings are minimal once the saw is in your hnads. I'm only 5'8" 165 so I notice saw weights.

The 510 really wakes up with some muffler minor muffler mods and a carb. tuning. I wouldn't go over an 18" bar though and at $329.95 MSRP (check your local dealer) you could probably walk home with one for $350.00 with tax, a spare chain, gallon of bar oil, 2-stroke oil, and even a case if you go to the right dealer. Here in Illinois, we've had fairly mild weather (high temps.) and little snow. Midwest dealers are HUNGRY. I'm sure that if you're willing to lay down some cash, most shops are going to bite.

Note: The aforementioned prices and "deal" are in no way an advertisement. They are just an example.

I just found out my favorite lawn mower/small engine repair shop is now a full Dolmar dealer complete with demo saws and 1-2 days parts availability .He didn't have a 5100 yet,but had 510's for $299 with an 18" bar. He's expecting some 5100's and 7900's in soon. Could be an addition to my signature before long :hmm3grin2orange:

BUY EM'

You'll be happy. I demoed a 7900 for a really cool logger today and he was grinning pretty wide. I like to see people smile when they get a chance to run a piece of equipment.

Granted, a few cuts through a test log aren't the same as humping the trees with your new toy but it fives you an idea of the speed and power. We allow customers to "trade-up" for a larger piece of equipment. If they got a deal on the smaller saw though and decide they need something bigger. They have to pay the difference to our sticker price on the bigger unit as their unit is now considered a demonstrator and must be discounted.

Good luck. GO DOLMAR!!!

I wouldnt say their other saws are junk and to not look at them. The 460 and 510 are on the same frame as the 5100 and they are nice machines!

Not quite the same frame, as the cases are not magnesium, but aluminium - and heavier.....

Imo, the 460 and 510 both are too heavy for their power.

I believe the ps 460,ps 510 are updates on the 540,maybe a Dolmar guru can confirm this. ....

That is not right either, as they are totally new designs, as is the PS-5100, 5000 and 4600....

The 540 is a downrated late model, based on the old 115 design.

Ok the money I had did finally burn a hole in my pocket and escaped.

I just didn't like the feel of the Dolmars so the answer is 2 saws:

I bought a used MS361 and a Homelite Ranger 33cc.

Now before I get grief on the Homelite is was bought for just under $100 out my pocket at the depot including a case. It has a 2 year warrranty.

I wanted an inexpensive saw that could be stolen and that I would not care about. I can leave it up in the cabin at the woodlot or up in the bush itself ovenight and not worry too much if someone liberates it!

Many times I go to the woodlot without taking saws as I am gardening or landscaping and then all of a sudden find a tree blow down or branch that I would like to cut and have no saw with me.

In the summer I will leave it hidden up the top of the hill with some gas so when I walk the perimeter I can do some brushing if I feel like it when I get to the top without carrying the saw all the way in.
