hello...just wondering where most of you get your special tools from. i am currently shopping for a compression tester, vaccum pump, ignition tester and just curious if most of you guys buy these items from your stihl dealers or from elsewhere. Im not even sure if you can purchase them from local dealers or not. I know i can find these items from other sources, but really just curious about the stihl products.THANKS

Those tools - elsewhere... Way too expensive from Stihl, and dealers aren't "supposed" to sell tools anyhow (many do).

Pressure is easy - $29 or so from www.mfgsupply.com.

Vac - just use a mityvac - from an autoparts store.

adjustable spanner wrench, etc.

I've been looking for an adjustable spanner wrench that will work on some of the small saw clutches. I am talking about the ones that have pins that protrude about 1/4" and the spacing between them can be adjusted. I am also looking for a reasonable quality, small, adjustable puller for flywheels and gears, etc. It has to be one with fingers thin enough to fit between the case and the flywheel on smaller saws. I might even consider buying more than one size puller if I can find a model that comes in different sizes.

If you use a puller that goes around the outside of a Stihl flywheel, you'll have a great chance of breaking it.. or worse, cracking it ,but you don't notice....

lakeside--what is the thread dia and pitch--on the inside of a 090 flywheel--where the puller goes to pull the flywheel---???? doesnt someone know??

I'm not sure... I have one in my tool box - it's used on many Stihl saws - I'll need to measure it later. It is for sure Metric... The entire puller is less than $20, or so...

Hey BCMKTG, I would post a link but can't on this work computer. Harbor freight tools has an adjustable pin wrench (spanner). I think I paid about 5 bucks for it. Quality ain't bad for occasional use. Would not rely on it for everyday use though. HTH, KD

I've been meaning to ask a question about Stihl tools, so this seems to be the place.

I'm wondering if I should buy the crankshaft removal tools. The special tools book lists the AS tool for removing the clutch side and the ZS tool is listed for removing the ignition side. I was recently reading up a service manual for one saw I think I might need to change the crank bearings on and it only made reference to the ZS tool?

By all accounts, well Andy's, it sounds like these will be expensive for the not much more than hobbiest use I would put them to so a.) how much are they likely to cost and b) what kind of thing could I use to get round needing them?

Well, I checked Harbor Freight once about a month ago and didn't find it, but it isn't far down there, so I will go back and try again. Thanks for the tip! :)

Stihl AS and ZS tools

how much are they likely to cost

I don't know dealer cost, but I paid $250 for each tool when I bought them. And you are at the dealers mercy, by their contract they are not supposed to sell these tools.

what kind of thing could I use to get round needing them?

Check out Lake's great article on rebuilding an 066, he shows home made tools that will work good. http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=40590

oly....they are under small engine repair...and if you still have trouble type a search and it will list it

lake--the flywheeel puller less than 20---????? where from--i asked at the stihl dealer--he said 100+!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hheeelllllppppppppppp-----

It cost him about $16... so... I was figuring maybe $20..

He may be confused with the oil seal puller.

Do an ebay search of Stihl puller... it will take you to a store or two...
