Here's novice question number one: What's the correct procedure when replacing a starter rope on a Husky 44? It had been replaced recently at a shop but the knot on the inside slipped loose. I took off the cover and replaced it and the saw starts but the rope is not rewinding all the way. Also, I have another 44 that has the recoil spring out. Are there any tricks to getting it back in place that I may be able to master? I'm new to small engines but would like to learn the basics. I certainly appreciate the information posted on this site.

There is most likely a notch in the starter pulley. pull the rope out so there is some slack. While holding the pulley to feep the rope from winding, feed some of the slack through the notch and wind the pullley one revolution tighter (clockwise) then check the action of the rewind assembly. Be careful not to overwind the starter spring. You can check for an over wound spring by pulling the rope all the way out and checking to see that pulley is still able to be moved toward the tighter direction. You want to make sure that the rope is what is stopping the handle from being pulled out further rather than the rewinind spring being bound.

This should help.
