I have a new 026pro which I bought new and I thought It was going to be at least equal or better than my 031av. I think the saw has anit kickback chain on it. I had it sharpned and I told it was dull. I have only a few hrs on this saw baybe it needs to be broken in? I dosn't throw chips or cut like my old 031av or Husky 36. I was going to throw a new carlton chain on. The saw does run fine but it dosn't throw chips and seem to have the power my old 031av has. All the money I spent on this saw I'm not pleased.

Hi Mark,

The cutting performance of your 026 will be dramatically improved with a chisel chain like Stihl RS or equivalent. The semi-chisel with the ramped links is a disservice to this saw. I`d also make sure that your carb is adjusted properly. Too many saws come from the factory running lean and they are down on power. Hopefully you don`t have a fixed hi speed jet Intellicarb on thet 026Pro because they are a real PITA to get jetted properly unless you live in an area where the temp never changes too much during your cutting season. The best solution in the case of a fixed jet is to swap carbs for a three screw model like the wt-426. I may know where you could find one for less that Stihl retail(which will choke a horse).

The 031 had more grunt than the 026, so you may need to learn to keep your chain razor sharp and let the saw do the work instead of trying to push the saw.

ctcadman, Where in ct. are you? I am right off rt. 84 near the Beacon/Newburg bridge. I have 5 fully adjustable carbs for 026 and a slightly modified muffler in stock. I'd be happy to show you how to make your 026 talk.

I have a MS260 and I really like the saw it save my back from using my 046. I have a 20" bar the 260 with RS chain you keep it sharp the saw cuts fast you have to keep in mind a 260 is a small saw.

I didn't buy the saw for bucking firewood I use it for limbing and small falling if I have alot of bucking todo I will use the 046.

My 026 pro runs preaty good, just ask crofter (Frank). The way that mine is set up it still is very torky and easily out cuts my 036.
Very nice saw for small wood.

Chris

well ill give my 026 a good nod as its a fine tool.. but cut with my 036.. dont hrdly think so..course yours could be better than mine.. i think my 026 is heck of a saw..but the 036 will go thru a 20 incher hardwood like its childs pl;ay.
its apleasure to use both..

That's right, blame the carb without even diagnosing the problem.
Did you just buy the saw, or did you get it somewhere other than a dealer? If you got it at a dealer, take it back and have them open the jet up. Not as big a deal as some here would like you to believe. How is it now? Does it seem to have a bit of a rich sound out of the wood and smooth out in the wood? If so, the problem ain't the carb.
The square tooth chain will help. Opening the muffler will help. But if you bought this to equal an 031, you will have to adjust your thinking a little.
031 is an older style saw, more cc's, not as fast as the 026, but more low end torque. Add the fact it ran 3/8 chain, and you made lots of big chips and cut a lot of wood.
Newer saws run a bit less torque, but run faster. A sharp chain is a must, not an option. The .325 chain will throw a smaller chip, but more of them if you let the saw run up to speed.
I have ran them both in the woods. Adjust a little bit, and you will still make lots of firewood, with a bit less back strain.

What are you saying Stihltech? That the fixed jet carb isn`t such a common problem that Stihl abondoned it? Yes, we are all very proud of you for being able to adequately tune them and I respect your ability, but those carbs suck for the most part and the AVERAGE shop can`t seem to make them run right for a person who knows how the saw should run.

Thank You, Thank You very much! :D

Dan,

Your seasonal temp swings in Atlanta probably aren`t as wide as we see up north. The problem up here is also compounded by oxygenated fuel. It`s hard to run equipment like a saw that is so dependent on the proper fuel/air ratio when they go and change the fuel on us.

Wow, what a great site. Work hard, fix your customers problems and get attacked for it. FISH FOR MODERATOR!!!

By the way, they are black with a very large Stihl logo where it counts.

Stihltech, The last time I was at Stihl school (2 weeks ago) one of the test questions was "Stihl carburetors are set up to run............................" The answer ......."As lean as possible" As lean as possible is NOT what the saw operator wants, it's what the epa wants. I for one WANT an adjustable carb on EVERTHING I own. When I find one for my 017 then all of my Stihls all 11 of them will be fully adjustable. I am proud of you for taking the time to re-jet carbs as needed, I have better things to do with my time. The smaller the engine the more sensitive it is to carb settings, a fixed jet will NOT be right every single day of the year and CANNOT cope with seasonal changes to the fuel supply...........more medling by the E.P.A. I sold my "buns of Stihl" undies on e-bay.

I think both of you silly little boys should put your saws where your mouth is and run em at Dans. Then when the chips settle there sould be some very good answers to all our questions... Well unless your Yeller!

I may not win but I run what I bring and the 021 is comming to town dan, Don't worry I'll bring a bow saw for back up if the saw starts to cut into the adult beverage time.

Chris

I would lve to go to Dans, but schedule will not allow it. Besides I am not a racer and really do not have a interest in racing saws. I like kick butt woods saws. BTW Where you the guy that said he built up a Toro snowblower. I got one and was eying it up the other day.
I know its a sickness.

Am I one of the silly boys you are calling out? I'll bring my 026 for some fun. I'll also bring my stock 7900 so I can see how much slower it is than a Dan Henry special, if it's too slow maybe I'll leave it with Dan.

I think there are gonna be some fast 7900's there. I think there will be a KD7900, a PP7900 and maybe even a EHP 7900.
Should be a great shootout.

Almost all of the saws ran at John where woods saws. And I imagine almost all at Dans will be a woods saw. One thing that can be said at these events is that if you don't go you will miss alot of fun and learning.

As far as calling out people, I say run em and see. I ran my 3120 stock against Ed's 3120 stock. He was either .2 or .3 ahead of me in the two trees. When I left I was under .2 behind him, Plus he helped me adjust my set up to make the saw faster. Thats what it is truly about, learning.

Ben,
Yes I did toy with a toro snow blower and had very good luck with it. Real easy with what I did, Pulled the Metal baffle out and drilled 3 holes in the muffler. Grandpa said it didn't run that good new. I was taking on 8" snow at a nice pace too.
Hope that helps,

Chris

I guess we will see what builder makes the fastest 7900. I cant wait to see all those saws run.

MarkyMark,
I just got my pics developed from Gypo's and I have a great pic of you and your Better half. I just need to get these put on a CD and then I can e-mail you one.
