went out today and priced two saws at the dealer, Tell me, is he way off base or has it been way too long since I bought a saw off the shelf????
these were the prices for the two saws I looked at...how do they compare to what they are near you.

1986 models
Husky 346 XP --$768.16 + Tax Cdn. funds

Husky 455 Rancher --$664.00 + Tax Cdn. Funds

sticker shocked!

out here 750 plus tax will get you running a 357 xp

625 plus tax will get you a 2156 jonsered
650 plus tax = 2159
750 plus tax will get you a stihl 361
these prices are for fall 2006

Husky highway robbery

Please tell me you're joking. I bought my 353 two years ago and it was $500 plus tax which I thought was a lot. But $768 for a 346xp and over $600 for a Rancher? Time to move to Stihl.
I bought my MS361 in November for $699 CDN plus tax and that included a promotional case, extra chain, maintenance CD and hat. That's still not chump change but far better value than the Huskies you're quoting. Are they suicidal?

yea, those prices are normal, in some cases (esp in Vancouver) they can be even higher. I saw a dealer selling a Husky 3120 with 44" bar for the tidy sum of $2000 cdn before taxes. Stihl is much the same, very very high priced, often higher than Husky pricing. You really want to blow your mind though, try buying climbing gear (tree). i got suckered for 100' of slickline throwline for $45 CDN. other examples : Petzl FIXE micropulley $60 cdn, 1/2" 16 strand XTC climbign rope 200' for $350 cdn, cheap cordura 12 oz throwbag $45 cdn, rope bags for $80+ dollars, on and on and on....

hunt around though, i did find a chainsaw dealer that had very fair pricing and excellent service...not all the stores will rape you for your hard earned money.

Health care? I could by a LOT of saws for the $9000 I spend on "insurance" for me and my wife... and then there is the out-off pocket and deductibles and...

sounds like free healthcare REALLY ISN"T FREE!
Last few years wife broke the wrist got it pinned. I fell tore my rotator cuff and ruined some other stuff. I was off for 8 months after surgery etc. My cost $0.00 The wifes cost $0.00 Also collected full wages for both of us.
Not bad for free EH!!! But we do pay, it's all hidden. The system is going downhill fast. Not sure why, mismanagment, wages, costs or abuse. FWIW 235,000 barrells of oil go by my house every day to the south, and you get fuel much cheaper than me!!!!

its free if your a drug addict, homeless person. But if your an upstanding citizen, you get raped 785 different ways (different taxes and taxes on taxes) and you still have to pay for medical (monthly). Ambulance rides are also $$$$, unless your a drug addict or homeless, then its free.

like BigBadBob said, there are MANY hidden ways of charging you, from user fees, etc etc etc.

:bang: :bang:

Taxes

Don't you folks up north of the border pay some kind of Value Added Tax or something along those lines? Whats that all about? Is it a tax on the tax, or just another gimmick to bleed some more dinero from you?
I guess that each of our respective countries has it's good and bad points, all things considered we could be in alot worse places.

Normally I'd recommend buying a saw from a local shop, but if that's the best they will do, I'd be looking at mail order from Bailey's:

346XP: $420 + $42 (7% tax / 3% customs) + $25 shipping = $487
455R: $350 + $35 (tax/customs) + $25 shipping = $410
350: $310 + $31 (tax/customs) + $25 shipping = $367
(prices are in USD)

Not that I'm gonna advocate 'smuggling,' (yet ;) ) but after seeing this, and the prices in other posts from the U.K & elsewhere... What is the $$ damage (taxes/customs) for someone in another country having a "gift" shipped from the US? The only international "deal" I ever had was shipping a set of Jeep coil springs to Alberta, CA... Since they were old, rusty, used, and were free to me, I didn't charge the guy anything for them. USPS Parcel Post shipping and customs duty was like $24 total IIRC.

Believe it or not, but those prices are really low, compared to here (except the 455).... :bang:

The dreaded "GST" man we all hate that!!!

People wonder why I buy some things from the US, quad accesories, saw parts, cameras etc. It can be 50% cheaper. And I have asked many times where the other 50% goes and can get no answers!!!! I bought a part for my ATV made by Warn, it was $205 US to my door, here the same part was $469 plus taxes!!!!! About $550 Canadian. I just ordered 3 of those little tachometers, $45 + S&H for all. Each one here is over $100 if you can find them. No wonder those to the south enjoy cars toys etc, it's reasonably priced. As soon as the ordinary guy finds a loop hole it gets closed.
Nuff said.

Too bad that will only work if he picks them up in person, or has them shipped to a US address. Bailey's isn't authorized to sell Husqvarna saws to purhcasers outside the US.
