I got the saw with no muffler on it. Now that I've found out they are so scarce, no doubt somebody grabbed it for another saw.

Thanks,

Pete

The one that is in the link you posted will fit and work well, it can be modded some on the upper right hand corner. There are some picts of modded 028 mufflers on this site somewhere, since the changeover I have not been too successful finding past posts but will give it a try. I found quite a few threads covering modding 028 mufflers and picts also but cannot get them to embed. Ok ,.guess this one did.

Guys,
I may be wrong but I think the 028 AV and the 028 super have different mounting points for the mufflers, I know the cases are different. So is that the "mods" you guys are talking about or a performance mod?

Super and AVEQS are the same , very early 028 with the metal fuel tank had a different muffler with a screw through the bottom corner into the crankcase.

:agree2:Yep....You're 100% correct.....Chances are that 028 AV will have the early muffler with the "speed nuts" attached to the back half of the muffler. You can't use a late "super" muffler on those 028's as there are no threaded bosses on the crankcase for the lower mounting screws.

Those early mufflers can be harder to find at times.

He didn't mention "E", but I think it's safe to assume he's got an AVEQ and the late model muffler is probably correct. They aren't too hard to find on this side of the pond, but shipping to France is likely to be cost prohibitive.:dizzy:

Sorry Jerry!! My brain completely overlooked the word "Quick Stop" in the OP's post! It likely does use the late muffler.

No problem ROB,..I get sidetracked sometimes , been running searches for a 028 and found a few, just got to know what muffler he really needs. The very early 028`s had the nuts welded to the backside of the muffler shell on the bottom, correct? Was the early 028 called a Quick Stop? I thought they were just an 028AV but may be way off base.

You're right Jerry, I just went to the basement to look at my AV and super carcus's ( or is it carcasi ?) and the metal tank is different.

Yeah, the early one has the nuts welded to the back half of the muffler and no place on the crankcase for the lower screws to attach like the supers have.....The early one just has the one screw from the side to support it..

Like you say....The OP needs to clarify how his mounts.

WOW! Thanks for the help. I'm headed up to the farm today and will post pics when I return later in the week. I'll have pix of the exhaust and measure the bore too.

Part of the issue of I.D. might be that this is a European market saw if that makes any difference.

Since they are so hard to find, if the right one exists in the states, no problem. A small box in the mail is only about $8 to France.

Thanks again,

Pete

I have a used muffler from a 028 AV you can buy, that will fit....
it's from this saw:

Ok Pete, we will be watching for your return with picts. Shipping is no big deal or expense, I have shipped parts overseas from here cheaper than I can send them to the US. Maybe the muffler from the saw in Denmark might fit we shall see.

I am no expert on the Euro market saws, but I believe the only differences between US & world marketed saws is internals and exit ports (and maybe appearance, i.e. protective grills). I believe the mounting points (for the correct series vintage) will match regardless. If someone knows differently I'm sure they'll pipe in..........btw nice that's a nice pipe in Denmark.

Post up pix of the mounting location, I'm quite sure someone in North America can come up with one if you strike out across the pond. Stihl sold metric tons of these saws here over the years.....

If it is a side-mount muffler, you can always tack a standoff onto a super muffler and make it work. I have had a few 028's here with those side-mount posts. They're almost always cracked there. If there is a will there is a way, and it is certainly worth the time to repair. 028's always seem to slide right on by here and find new homes. Someday I'll run across a nice late model side adjuster and it will stay.
