I have an opportunity to buy either or both of these saws. I am aware of their respective specs, but which of these is more reliable, easier to work on, and the parts are more accessible? They both are in excellent shape....about $150 each w/bar & chain.

ive ran the hell out of my 028, even ran it over with my Z71.... cuts strong and handles great with 16-18 inch bar. Will take a 20 but have to be gentle with her. I have an 029 super but its in parts with a smoked piston. This question has popped up several times before and most people will tell you its hard to beat the 028 when it comes to reliability. Parts are there but not nearly around as much as the 029. 028 are much better built IMO. and for a 028 super with good bar and in good condition for 150 bones...me personally id jump on that.Buy em both :D

+1 on the 028.I like them so well I own 5. Just need to work on them.I Just don't like the 029 too much.I just have a couple of those.:ices_rofl:

I'll vote for the 029. It makes more power, and all of the parts are still available at your dealer. Plus it uses a normal style sprocket and bearing, and has a very simple (and adjustable) oiler.

If your just getting 1 saw get the 029 parts are still available verses the 028 that parts are starting to get slim especially the carberator and the ethanol eats them up anymore. And on the plus side with the 029 if you do happen to blow it up get the 039 piston and cylinder aftermarket only about $120 bumps you up to 64cc port the muffler and you got a heck of a saw just finished doing one 039 with muf mod 20" bar full chisel 3/8 chain cuts great

For $150 a piece, buy both of them, run 'em both to see which one you like better, and sell the other one for $200+ making the one you keep even less expensive.

You've already received several opinions, but here's mine. Which is the better saw - the 028S. Which will be more reliable and easier/cheaper to fix - 029S. Only you know how much and how heavy of usage the saw will see, so determine if you want a durable, but more difficult and costly to repair saw, or one that may not be a tank, but is easy & cheap to repair.
