Hello, guys, I have purchased a 034av stihl saw with a 20" bar. Can anyone provide me with any information on how good of a saw this is? Is the the predessesor of the 361? Is it a professional saw? The saw is used, and now sure of its age, any help?...great shape hardly used, paid $50.00 for it..How much power does it have etc....Thanks guys...

You didn't buy it, they gave it to you! Great saw, pro quality, yes, (along with the 036) replaced by the 361.

20" is about the limit for bar length, at least in my opinion. We've got two at work with 18" bars, happy saws. Got an 034 super at home (a few more cubes) with a 20, will probably go to an 18 when it needs a bar.

Great buy!

I just bought a 034 av and put a 20 inch bar on it. I agree that 20 inch bar is about as much as it wants. So far like the saw, I just need to research up on how to tune the carb right cause it dont seem like its gettin all the rpm out of it it should. By the way, I paid 100 bucks for mine and stole it, so you REALLY stold yours!

in the late 80's I bought a Stihl 043 AV Super was a wonderful saw, best I have used to date

Well thanks guys sounds like I got my $50.00 dollars worth, it is like new condition, even came with original box and all paper work...So, this saw is from the late 80's?...how much horse power?

Put a skip chisel on it... wakes it up real nice... Also, mod your muffler or find an 036 muffer that fits (side venting type of the correct length).

Lake I been searchin the site how to mod this muffler, and I cant find anything. I know its there, I just cant seem to find it. If replacing it with a 036 muffler is as good, Im game for that. If I use a 036 muffler do I still need to richen the carb? :chainsaw:

You definitely stole that baby, better run before they call the cops on ya. 4.1 HP according to the service manual. Nice pick up.... If there's any more or your tired of that already feel free to send it over.:jester:

I agree with Lakeside. With a 20" bar running full skip chisel is ok. I have also run .325 Narrow Kerf on the 20". 16" bar with full comp chisel works real well.

I was playing with my muffler and realized that it was pre EPA, and already opened all it wants to be.

Good saw. For $50 it is an excellent saw:blob2:

Main reason I am runnin a 20 inch bar on my 034 is my boss gave me the rollo E bar brand new, and the 16 inch silver streak that came on it was kinda rough. Its all 3/8 now, but I been kinda thinkin about switchin over to .325 so it runs same as my 026 Pro.

You can mod your 34 muffler, but as it's front venting with a front guard you'll need to add a port on the right side of the rear casing (clutch side at the back). If you need a screen it's a lot easier just to get an 036 muffler. If it's old enough, you won't even need to enlarge the hole...

You might be able to just drill out the exit on the rear of the front cover of the 034 .. depends on the actual muffler fitted.

Richen? - maybe a hair... They run pretty rich anyhow.

I think based on your advise I'll look for a 036 muffler, sounds easiest, but I can use the old 034 muffler to try a mod on, see if I have any luck. Thanks a lot!

Gettin ready to mod this 034, since Im waitin on a carb for the 026. My question is about the back part of the muffler on this 034. The exhaust port comes into the muffler and there is a box inside the muffler with holes in it for exhaust to flow out to the right when looking at the muffler from the front of the saw. Ok, then there is the front venting cover. Can I drill a hole or two in this inner baffle box, then drill a hole or two in the cover and improve flow? I hope this is understandable, if I need to I will post some pics.

Here are a few pics of the existing muffler. I was planning to drill a hole on the front of the baffle on each side of the center seam. Then possibly drill a hole or two in the inside of the baffle to match the holes in the inner baffle. Tell me what ya think.

You can an just drill the crap out of it if you like.. Then the limiting factor will then be your exit hole(s). Your guide can be the 036 - it has no internal cage/baffles.

Ok, will it be a better gain if I remove the internal baffle? By the way I was just researching your 361 muffler mod...Nice work, but I dont have the tools to do that, all I can do now is cut and drill....lmao

I dont want to just drill hell outta things, I hope to gain something by this, or I will just get a 036 muffler like you talked about as an option in a thread.

I was thinking after altering the internal cage, drill holes in the cover without disturbing the outer portion, then put the screen back in. If it wont help as a mod, I aint gonna do it.
