Guys,

Trying to fit a new Muffer on my 036. The one on the saw currently is the type that has the "grill" on the front and only has two screws. It is cracked and needs to be replaced.

My replacement is the style with a solid front cover (not sure which style is newer or older). When the tabs of the muffler seat to the saw's case, the muffler body does not seat to the exhause port. Now, before you go off, I have the metal muffler gasket and the heat shield. Are there any other parts that I am missing?

With the gasket and shield there seems to be about a 1/16th inch gap.

Am I missing parts?
Do I have the wrong part (anyone have the PN for an 036 muffler)?
Do I really have an 036?

Got this saw on eBay and other than the name plate I wouldn't know the difference.

Thanks for any advice.

Oh boy... been there....

The muffler with the grill on the front is from an 034 or 034S... Not an 036. There are several mufflers over the 14+ years that saw and variants were made. SOME will fit, some will be 2mm too long, and some 2-4mm too short...

The mufflers have been changed but here is still a version that will fit correctly.. I believe it's the -0606 version and I'm "reasonably" sure it doesn't use the heat shield or spacer.

You MIGHT have an 034 that still an 034, or, it might have been converted to an "036" by replacing the P&C. I've had several just like you describe, and all were 034 conversions to the bigger bore of the 036.

In your case, you might just get way with simply removing the heat shield - it will be close... The heat shield was never on the 034 or 034S (in the USA), or even the early 036. Even then you them might still have to put a tiny brass spacer between the muffler and the bottom muffler mount holes.

Make sure your top cover isn't pressing on the new muffler - if so just trim the underside or top edge. Same with the brake handle - make sure it clears the muffler without melting...

The spacer is part number 1122 145 1200. I usually take out the heat shield and use the spacer when putting the newer 036 style muffler on an early 036 or 034/034 super. Otherwise you'll bend the mounting tabs up front. The spacer lists for $5.45. You also need this same spacer when putting a newer 066 style muffler on an early 064.

Thanks guys. I actually need to fill the gap between the exhaust port and the muffler. The spacer sounds like an option. Is it specifically for this purpose? Or, is it borrowed from another application?

Wish I had discovered this site before leaping into the world of chiansaw ownership. Now I know what scoring looks like first hand. Andy, I agree with you about the economics. It gets hard to justify the cost of bringing a worn out saw back to life vs. buying a new(er) one. Lots of run out machines out there on eBay bringing in hefty bids.

My saw is OK, but contemplating a new piston/rings and honing the cylinder to eek out a bit more life. But I have no idea what the crank looks like, etc., etc., etc.

Thanks again. Love this site.

Yes, I did misread your first post. You do have an older 034... The spacer is just for that purpose - as suggested above, take out the heat shield though... and I believe you'll need you'll need two gaskets - one each side of the spacer. The IPL shows only one and the heat sheild, but I don't believe that's correct with the older cylinder. One combination will work!

If you ever upgrade the cylinder to an 036, then at least you have the right muffler!
