So this weekend I picked up a 038 super. It needed a little work and a cleaning but came out nice. A funny thing happened when I was cleaning out the mouse nest in the gas tank, the mouse was still inside! It fell out into my trash can. After a through cleaning and about 12 bucks of parts from the local dealer, I poured some gas in it and it fired away after the 4th pull. Sounds great. Cuts smooth and fast.
So now for a few questions, it didn't come with a bar and I don't know how big I should go. I stole the 16'' bar off of my 031 for some test cuts. So should I go for a 20'', 24'' or 28''. I will mainly use it for firewood but will take some trees down with it. I am leaning towards 20'' but I have a ms270 with a 18'' and the 031 with the 16'', so those bar sizes are similar.
Secondly, What is the function of the steel mesh on the air filter cover? It goes right above the spark plug and I have no idea what its for.
Lastly, on the side of the saw there is a circular rubber gromet that looks like where a kill switch could be. It has the I and O stamped near it but I have no clue why it would be there.
Thanks for the help, I have read that the 038 supers and magnums are one best saws Stihl has ever made, so I want to make it last.
