Noobe here, hello to all. I recently accuired a Stihl 041 that had been sitting a few years. gas tank had varnish in it. Plug is good.fuel filter is toast, plus fuel lines are dry rotted. Any help to locate parts would be appreciate, any help to get this thing running would be appreciated too.
Thanks In Advance

No point in getting used parts to replace the rotted rubber.. head to your stihl dealer (find one that knows older saws, not your local rental company) to buy the parts. They are inexpensive. You'll need an IPL, and preferably a service manual. I'm not sure if the manual is still available, but there are several Ebay store sources to get one.

Illustrated Parts List (IPL) it will have an exploded view of the saw with all the part numbers. It makes it 10 times easier to get parts from a dealer when you have an IPL.

If you will post some wanted parts for this saw in the trading post im sure some of these fellas have what you need......but if you only need fuel lines and a filter i would go to a local shop.

part #'s

does anyone have the part # for the fuel filter for a 041?. the local Ace is supposed to have parts, but I want to make sure the part is correct. I would appreciate if someone has an illustrated parts list they could share?
thanks

Don't use the aftermarket filters... I get to bill out a lot of service work because of crappy filters. The stihl filter is cheap enough ($5.20), and has a replaceable inner core (which you should replace annually) for less than $2.00. entire filter Part number 0000 350 3504.

BTW, the IPL will show the original lead weighted sponge core filter supplied with the 041. It's not available (thank god) so be careful taking the IPL as the only source of info.

Unless the Ace Hardware has a Stihl dealer there I wouldn't buy parts there. Especially normal wear and tear parts like filters. There is a Sebo's Hardware near hear that has a small "mom & pop" type Stihl dealership in it that mostly does mailorder parts and minor services. Is that what it is?

When you replace that fuel line also replace the impulse line on that 041. I had an old 041FB rigid frame. Good saw, but I sold it a couple months back... and the IPL I had went with it.

Good luck, Gary

No prob.... everyone was a noob once. Just some seem to forget that now and then.:D

The impulse line runs from the crankcase to the carb. it uses the vacuum/pressure from the crankcase to move the diaphram in the carb to supply fuel from the tank. If it is cracked, plugged up, or has a bad seal, it won't supply enough fuel to the carb to run the saw. Or it can cause the saw to lean out when running.

I procurred a parts list. The local Ace is an authorized Stihl dealer according to the website. I am going to retro the gas filter with a newer version instead of the weighted one and replace hoses and impulse line, clean the carb and gas tank, after that I will let yall know how it went. Thanks again

the carb wont pull gas into it. I can get it to fire with a little gas in the throat..it just wont pull the gas up..ideas??????

Yup, that's what they mean by "impulse line." The carb uses pressure pulses from the crankcase (you'll notice that your impulse line goes from the carb to the crankcase) to apply pressure pulses to a diaphram located inside the carburator. Valve action (simple, flapper-style valves) inside the carburator makes this a one-way (towards the jets) affair. If the impulse line is shot, the carburator diaphram is too degraded, or the carburator is otherwise plugged with old gas you'll not get gas to the carburator. You should replace the impulse line (real easy) and do a carb job (somewhat easy). These are cheap, simple fixes that you'll do fairly regularly if you muck with chain saws alot.

041 FB is a good (heavy and old, but good) saw.. just a caution... make sure that the saw has compression before you start investing money in it.

Frenchuguy,( whatever) if you happpen to need a part no, I have a IPL sitting around this mess someplace. It could need a carb kit. As to the gas line, I use the yellow colored plastic. You are able to view the gas going through it. Great saw.Lots of grunt and extry weight to help keep you in shape. Ken

well, I got the saw running. This thing is a beast. It will cut through a log like butter. I am going to rebuild the carb tho. Does anyone have the pn for a rebuild kit or do I have to order it piecemeal?

The gas is being pulled into the carb ok. Idle is a bit rough. rebuild should smooth that out. I have an IPL but it doesnt list a carb kit. any help????
TIA
