What's the SN of the saw?
I'm not sure of the SN. The owner of the saw lives near our cottage. We are heading to the cottage later this week for 10 days. So I'll hopefully return home with the saw. I'll get the serial number off the saw when we are at the cottage and post it

Thanks for the replies guys. My plan with this saw(if I get it) was to clean it up and see how it ran. If I wasn't impressed or the saw had some real mechanical probs I figured why not try building a hybrid and if I did a hybrid why not try the BB. I know the hybrids that most of the guys here have built were awesome but they all used stock sized 046 top ends. If this saw turns out to be a 12mm saw I will probably go ahead with the hybrid just for chits and giggles. I may even send out the 044 top end as well as the new 046 bb to have them both ported by a pro. I have at least 3, maybe 4 066 jugs that I could use to sweeten the deal.
2 o66 stihl jug with decomp
1 o66 mahle jug with decomp
1 o66 mahle jug no decomp
All the 066 jugs came of saws that died due to air leaks and bearing failures. I can't guarantee they are all salvageable jugs. They look decent to me.
I guess before I get to far ahead of myself I need to get the 044 and see what it's like first. 10mm or 12mm

I'd sure like to have all those jugs!

i built one of these a while back with a oem o46 jug and piston . very strong saw -- no problems with it either. so it is running a oem 52mm cylinder and jug. i still use it.

i built a MS440 crankcase end with a AM kit for a 460, the one with the 54mm piston. although the saw runs and makes very good power it will shake you and itself apart-- it is 83.4cc

and it makes a tremendous amount of heat too-- and it has so much compression it is a bit of a handful to start even with a decompression valve -- not fun to work with for sure.

it was a hard build as well --all kind of things want to 'bump hard" and all kinds of things have to be milled down , to get one of these to run correctly is going to be a big deal.

stick to the OEM 460 jug/piston and you can't go wrong IMHO.

So I got home from the cottage late last night. After a couple long conversations and a few adult beverages I wasn't able to talk the current owner into selling me his 044. He wouldn't even show it to me. He told me he figured out a way to start it and now he wants to keep it.

But so many hybrids have been built since this thread peaked a lot of interest. I built my first 044/046 hybrid back around 07, still love that saw, use it as often as cutting opportunities come along for it. Since 07 I have built 4 more hybrids, with more port work but my original I still like the best.

Ohhh yeah.
I could go that way someday.

I was hooing to see pictures and hit a brick wall at tge end of thread

Looks very strong.
In my opion it seemed to be lean in cut could hear the pitch changing and didnt even attemp 4 stroke when going for the dawgs. But man shes ripn i like that

I had one that Randy Evans built and ported for me. It ran great, but my ported 7900 was stronger. It was a nice saw... kinda wish I still had it, but I can't keep em all.

Here it is at 15

Saw made more power richer, like most do. Was trying to see what she would do with a 36” bar, Stihl RS full comp chain in hardwood.

This saw was purpose built for an older gent (68 yo) who had a tough time starting saws. It’s only 148 psi, has a “special piston”, and has a Hooskey 390XP decomp valve. It’s a 2 finger starter that I don’t need help from my wife to start. Made a second angle band cut after the squish band to lower compression.

I love how it's all quality this quality that . I think if this Canadian farmer wants to experiment then go for it . The 044 jugs always going to be there to back on . I would love to see a thread like this and results . I've seen others doing do Noone same results . But they all came up with the same results as In the lens run better had better time . Witch we all no .
Hello,I have 3 044,s 1 being the 10mm. I have a meteror big bore cylinder, domed piston with cabor rings. The thing is a monster so far turning 16.400. Don't know for how long thoughThis will be my 8th one. Getting g real good at blowing them up. Up to 8000 dollars at least in the past 2 years. Sure can tell you what not to buy and what defiantly won't work. HAS to be sthil coils.Save your time, nothing else will last over 4hrs,anything on Ebay that is. Have 2k. In shop Junk drawer to back me up. Lesson learned.

You need to find a builder instead of wasting engines.
