STIHL 051 AVL electronic, any good?

Anything positive - negative about these?

Would it be any good for a small mill? specs say 89cc

Would it be good as a sporadic used big brother for the 361?

what's cheap?
cons:
heavy
slow
thirsty
big vibes
loud
filter not great

pros:
very torquey for 89cc (long stroke)
parts easy to get (still made in brazil, PH is TS510, just stopped production)
very well made

In short, I'd get it. IMO, as a non-pro user, those pros outway the cons. Also, you can bolt a 58mm barrel making it 111cc (assuming it's a later one). That's pretty much the only upgrade. Very well suited to milling I'd say, just don't over do it at 89cc.

BTW, cant find it right away googling but whats the thing with the AVL electronic? AV= antivibe, electronic is the ignition but the L = ?

holy :censored: THAT is cheap. Jump on it! Wish I could get one that cheap...
Where does it say L? Book, filter cover? If it's on the filter cover, it must've rubbed off, if it's in the book, I'm clueless. As far as I know there was 051AV, 051AVE (electronic) and 051AVEQ (electronic quickstop)

to me its L , look at the L from Stihl, exactly the same typo

wtf, that's the wierdest 051 I've seen... Seen quite a few recently and never seen one with that air filter cover, let a lone the L (yeah it looks like a non-worn L). Can you post some more photos? It looks like it has a different set up on top, must be a rare version or something. Certainly never heard of an L, but I'm sure someone more experienced will pipe up...

looking at it and comparing with the 051 pictures posted here in other threads i see:

- less ventilation openings at the starter cover

- a hole in the oil tank (? ) casting or worse ????

hmm, well if it runs and oils well I'd still say it's worth $30, especially 5...
It must have a larger air filter than normal, cf

this is the normal style (early - cast numbers)


the start housing look very early (the bit with the hole), the exhuast guard is early type, but it has an al name tag which implies later...

I'd say it's a pretty early 051AV (maybe even 050, anyone tell the difference?) with an special/custom airfilter. I'd go for it...

I've never seen the cast 051 cover only the aluminum tag, so its a later 051, plus its electronic. The L is strange.
What the L is it.
Buy it and show us the air cleaner.

must be an eastern european thing - pretty sure you don't get them in uk, and most photos i see are in usa so i don't think they were available there either...

It would surprise me that eastern european specs did exist that time ( build in microphone maybe ?, L for Listening to you red guys), googling i found 041 AVL, 050 AVL but no explanation what it means.

1 guy mentioned the AVL being newer than the AV but no reasons why
The 050 AVL had also the casted lettering.

Tune in specialists and give us a clue!

I have been selling Stihl for a long time, almost 30 years, and I have not seen a 041avl before. I have heard of a 050avl, and of course 015l. The l on those models ment an added feture, usually a better air filter, or something like that. Oldcdawg

I wonder how available the improved filter elements are. I assume it'd be easy to fit a regular filter and cover though.

Meaning of Q in 051 AVEQ

I found a mention of the AVEQ in an old Stihl brochure from the 70's that I have and it means "Quickstop chain brake system".
