There's an 056 on the Bay right now in what appears to be immaculate condition. It's already over $500 with better than 5 days to go. Wondering where this puppy's going to top out at? No it's not mine - but gosh I sure wish it was. I'm by no means an 056 expert, but it looks like a kick butt saw.

man.. its not even the super, or the big magnum or magnum II.. why bother?
sure its a beauty.. but it aint no $500+ beauty..

Man, I guess I missed out! I sold a very nice 056 Super with a boatload of extras with it, on ebay a while back, and got just over $450 for it. I was thrilled with that. Maybe I should have threw in some chains and I would have pulled in alot more!

Some people are just crazy.

oohhh I'm in stitches i like that description marky ............."except it needs a tuneup, it does not have a stop switch, it does not like to idle, the chain stop does not work, the cord sometimes does not recoil, some idiot painted it, and there is tape on the handle..... I dont know why the handle seems like its in 1 peice."

One thing I've noticed that seems to make a difference is the paint - throw a coat of paint on a tractor or saw and people will pay 33-50% more and maybe more than that. If this saw is in fact in original condition, I can truly appreciate that. $500 seems a bit steep, but the bids are coming from somewhere (assuming they're not of the shill variety). I was under the impression that the plain 056 - without its AV or Magnum dressing - packed some serious punch. Is this not the case?

bluegoose- You're absolutely correct about paint being a big booster of price. I painted mine before I sold it, and I'm sure it brought me another $150 over what I would've gotten had I not painted. That said, it was a darn sound saw, and was built well, and ran extremely well, so it was worth a good price, but the new paint sealed the deal. Here's a pic...

And the 056 was a good saw, and torquey by today's standards, but it pales next to the Super or the Magnums. Much like the 038 compared to the 038 Super.

Sometimes you get truly lucky on EBAY...... but mob mentality can take over REALLY quickly. You can buy a nice, used 066 for what that ancient (but admittedly great) 056 is going for. I'd say "swarmng" is the operative word.... time to walk away for sure.

Paint

Don't look like original paint to me. The handle bar looks well worn. Colour looks too white. Like to see some close ups. For $500 plus, even original paint is steep. Are chainsaw (Stihl) prices following the "Housing Bubble"? Mike.

But look at the bid history. most of the bids are from one person who has no feedback and appears to be driving up the price for everyone.

Good point,I feel it happens often. It's funny how on occasion the same article gets sold then reappears some time later by the same seller.I watched a pretty rough Mac 797 get sold about 4 times in 3 months, funny,I was the second bidder twice, hmm.I quizzed the seller about it but he of course did not reply.
