Does anyone have a picture of what this saw looked like right out of the factory? I plan on getting it as close to original as possible. Even the type of paint used if I could figure it out. I know the OEM piston kit is almost twice as much as aftermarket. I am still going to get it.

Great find man, your collection seems to be starting out right. If you still need a IPL or service manual there is a link in my signature line. A popular choice for paint is Ford gray and I believe it is New Holland orange.

Thank you all for the kind words. I don't have an IPL or a workshop manual yet but as I look closer it looks like there used to be a buffer on the underside of the handle by the clutch cover. If you look at the pictures you can see the gap I am looking at. There are also two cracks in the clutch cover. I did a compression test and it only pulled 90psi. I have to clean the dehumidifier parts off my bench and get this beast apart.

The "88" in permanent marker on the cover was an identification number for the tree service company.

You don't? ;)
Nice find.

So the Stihl White is really gray? I am semi color blind......can't tell the difference between tints and "in between" non distinct colors.

I agree that ford gray would look great. Would it decrease its value?

In all honesty that 090 looks very nice as it is, I personally would not do anything to it. Anytime I see a repainted saw the first question that comes to mind is "What are they trying to hide?" But a good running 090 AV is worth money even if it had no paint...........

Yes the Stihl white is actually more of a gray

I found this.....overpriced paint? Or good stuff?
Genuine Stihl Chainsaw Gray - White Spray Paint *New* | eBay

I have never used it myself but reports say it has no fuel/oil resistance and takes many coats to cover. I can also tell you that the paint has been NLA from the dealer for about 10 years now, so that can is at least that old.

I think you are right. However I do want to do something with the handle.

Thanks. I know many have been looking for a long time for a saw like this. I do suck because I really was in the right place at the right time.

You got an OEM piston? QUOTE]

you sure thats what it needs? i've seen many shops misdiagnose saws for the hope that the customer just leaves it behind. them 090's are no exception. good money to be made from the parts or resale. not saying that is what this particular shop did/does, however i would open it up and take a look for myself before wanting parts.

Ya post up a pic of the piston carnage,,,,, You really dont suck... just a tad bit envious maybe,,, but in a good way:D:msp_w00t:

Carnage you want to see....Carnage you get.

Piston is UGLY! The cylinder walls had some piston/piston ring material on them. Can't really tell in the pics.

Ouch!!!!!!! steel usually doesnt transfer it just gouges holes in the bore plating,,,,, if you cant tell if the Nikasil/Chrome isnt broken I would Degrease the bore with lacquer thinner or suitable solvent then rinse accordingly,,, Get some long q-tips and some muratic acid and take your time removing the aluminum transfer,,, it may clean up with a good hone job,,,, I have salvaged some cylinders that looked that bad or worse... if you have any more questions PM me your cell number,,,,

That should clean up nicely. I've had worst come out fine. I don't use a hone myself just 320 and 400 grit wrapped around a dowel rod. That way I'm just sanding on the affected area. Heating the jug makes the muratic acid eat the aluminum transfer faster, just watch the fumes.

Here are some other concerns:

There was a cylinder head bolt missing (could be from the dealer not putting it back after they worked on it)

The clutch wore a circle in the cover (gouged)

There is a substantial amount of play when pulling the clutch back and forth (could be the reason for the clutch gouging the cover)
