G stands for gear drive so can't be an 090G unless I'm missing something. Differences between the 070 and 090 are the cylinder and clutch so Yes you can bolt on a 66mm cylinder with no other modification. Any way you can post up pictures?

Maybe I bought an 070 labeled as an 090. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get an oem cylinder and pyston. the saw now pulls over easy and has 140 PSI compression

It's an 070. Clutch is another clue. Possible many parts have been mixed and matched. There was a guy on eBay with 10 OEM 090 cylinders but it's not there anymore. I think it's NLA from stihl.

must have been a 070 with an 090 label. you never really know what you have until you tear it apart.

Thanks a ton guys, I will keep you posted when the parts arrive-can't wait to run a real 090-should be worth the wait,-Joe

This is strange-I called the local Stihl dealer with my serial number 1258376. they told me that the saw was an 090 and was made in 1968 and the stock cylinder for that saw is MAHLE W6 582N4 (which is 58mm bore). I thought 090 saws were all 66mm bore and had 6 shoe clutches. Does it make sense to anybody that by "090" has 3 clutch shoes and a 58mm bore? he acted like my saw was definitely a 090. must be something to the story that I don't clearly understand.

By the time you buy the entire clutch, the drum and other miscellaneous parts for the clutch you will spend $500 just on the clutch. I've put a couple 090 top ends in the 070 series saw and you will absolutely not need the clutch unless you are over the three foot mark on the bar. Trust me I've been there you don't need it. An 075 runs a three shoe clutch and can run a sixty inch bar, a littleless torque but same idea.

thank you for that, I have an 088 for my short bars, I need the 090 for very big bars for cutting big stumps close to the ground, so for me the power is why I bought it to begin with. I seem to be an expert at buying lemons.
