I recently acquired a Stihl 090G chainsaw and have questions about maintaining the gearbox. I found instructions online that say the gearbox needs to be opened, drained, leaned, and refilled every six months. I don't know the history for the saw. Should I go ahead and do the maintenance, or can I tell by looking at the oil whether it really needs it? I would appreciate input from anybody with experience with gear-drive Stihls. The saw is in great condition, with minimal signs of use. I don't want to mess it up by not properly caring for it.

certainly worth checking out. just dont want a bunch of water in there. i assume they mean 6 months of regular use, so for the average person im sure the oil would be good for several years

I didn't understand well, is the clutch in direct contact with the transmission oil? or does it have the metallic cover that prevents the bath?

I am looking for a gasket for the transmission side, who sells these gaskets at reasonable prices?
