I have a Stihl 028 super and a Stihl 034av That need new crankshaft bearings. I have bought a handful of tools for rebuilding chainsaws already but cannot find a stihl bearing puller. I have a crankcase spliter so the cases are split already. How can I get the old bearings out and the new ones in with out beating them up ?
 
Strip off any plastic parts, and bake them in the oven for 20 minutes at 250 to 275°F.

Wear gloves, pull the cases out, and they'll tap right out.

You'd better wait until the wife leaves the house, if you're married, as it stinks up the kitchen.
 
Heat the case around the bearing and push it out. Tap the new one on the crank using a deep socket and a 2x4 to prevent damage to the crank. Then heat the case again to slide the crank in place.

If the bearings are stuck on the crank, heat or a generic bearing puller.
 
Yes my wife would have a fit if I put chainsaw parts in her oven for sure! I have a torch so I just heated the 034 case a bit and they both came right out with the socket and hammer . Works good thanks for the help guys.
 
don't heat it to hot, you'll burn the paint... have the gasket ready when you put it together, don't forget the oil hose in the tank half and make sure the alignment pins are set before you start to heat them when putting it back together. Use a brass hammer to relive side tension after its together, a good whack on the crank in each direction usually does it, should spin freely. Don't heat the bearing to put it on the crank, just tap it on with a deep socket and a little lube on the crank shaft.
 
stihl doesnt have bearing pullers they have what is call arbot presses i have the master stihl tool manual if anyone wants a copy

I use a good heat gun that can be adjusted, temp wise. Also use a laser temp gauge to monitor the heat.
