I see a few company's are selling foam filter kits for these. What's wrong with the stock filter? It appears one of the best sealing stihl filters I have laid eyes on. However, I haven't put the saw in the wood yet. Just curious.

I don't know why they would make a foam filter "upgrade"..... the filter on these saws is great.
I've got about 2 weeks of hard use on my ms400, (around 10 gallons of fuel through it now) the filter works great in my opinion. I tapped it out a couple times, but it really wasn't that dirty, and no dust inside the filter/carb.

Foam filters do work very well in a dirt bike. But to me the stock Stihl set up looks very well sealed. Maybe the foam filters flow a small amount more. Although given the same physical size more flow equals less filtration.

Why not? Everybody's got to eat, find a purpose and reason to get out of bed, even if it is to reinvent the wheel, to replace the perfectly good wheel already there.

The fierce criticism of any saw can be justified or not, yet fill 10, 20 pages of discussion here to drive the sale of the latest solution looking for a problem.

IMO, just put a sticker on your saw (there, you've now modded your saw), and go cut.

The stock filter is the same design as the 261, 362, and 462 where it seals on the inside and bottom as you twist it on, I believe. When they get problematic is when fines plug the pores. Air ends up getting sucked through the path of least resistance. Oiled foam flows more and filters better once the HD gets to that point. I’ve seen several of both setups and oiled foam keeps the fines out of the carb better and goes 10x longer without needing cleaned. That being said, there’s still nothing wrong with the stock setup if you wash it out once in awhile

That makes sense, Kevin.

I dont think the Echo filters are that good. It is old school like my 30 yr. old Stihl. I even found some dirt in the carb of my 620. That is not exceptable with todays engineering. Why would they have an air filter so loose that air gets in where it connects to the carb. All it needs is a rubber O ring . How much for that ? 20 cents? Piss poor design. I heard a complaint a few months ago about the Stihl 500 being much the same way. Stihl should know better after making chainsaws al long as they have been.

I still had problems after orings and grease. So I got an aftermarket filter setup. Not perfect but no more dust inside

I was curious what echo would say about their filter and the fines

The CS-620P features the G-Force Engine Air Pre-Cleaner for reduced filter maintenance. The G-Force pulls dirt and debris out of the air-box, keeping the air filter cleaner and allowing for longer intervals between air filter maintenance. The G-Force will drastically reduce the amount of dust in the air box overtime, but doesn't fully eliminate it. The following link is a short video demonstration for this feature; .

Fine sawdust is a result of cross cutting (against the wood grain). A dull chain creates fine sawdust instead of course strands. Build up saw dust around the carburetor will happen much quicker than normal with a dull chain. What you are experiencing is normal and won't harm the chainsaw. We recommend monitoring the condition of your chain and inspecting the air filter before each use, depending on the frequency and applications. Replace the air filter every 3 months based on the finding of damage or wear during inspection. Please refer to the Operator's Manual for maintenance instructions. Haven't touched it since I got it this past spring. Haven kept track of fuel since the 10th tank after I got it. Finished a oit about a 1/4 mile of fence row trees after I got it, I did 10 cord for home use, cut most of dad's 10 cord for his house. Few trees here and there. Only did a few days with my logging buddy. Guess around 40 to 50 hours on it tops. Not hard use by any means and a lot less then most.
Cleanest stihl air filter/ filter box I've ever seen.

That looks awesome. I feel like they do decent.

I would expect to see stuff in the air box. But in side the air cleaner neck intake area with sharp chains and at that time only a couple tanks of gas, fines in there is pretty sad. I cut yesterday with my 620 and 272xp, and with one screw loose I saw last night, there was far more fines on the outside of my red beard filter on 620 then on 272 filter. Whole different issue, but was interesting to see. With the amount of fines getting in air box, it’s even more critical that the echo air filters work better than they do.

I saw a video where the guy really liked this filter kit for the 620. I am thinking of getting it. Have you looked into it? Thoughts?? https://www.sawagain.com/copy-of-ec...5H_7sQSE24MS090PRTfaaVjZ247IPyDBoC7tMQAvD_BwE
