Hi guys! I collect and restore Stihl chain saws as a hobby and have monitored this site for some time.

I'm sure, I'm not the only one who has frustration with the purchase of Stihl parts. Does anyone know where I can get a Stihl parts price list? Purchase? Price List available on the web? If I had a parts price list, I would know if purchase was economical or trying to find the used part behind the barn. Thanks in advance for your input.

Information Obtained

Yipeeee! Thanks for reading my post. A member provided me with the information I needed. This is a great forum!

Bill, I traded a 044 tank for an older Stihl parts price list. All I need is an idea of what I would expect to pay.

As a followup to this question: Anyone care to share their alternative sources or products that they use to keep the repair and maintenance of Stihl chainsaws in reason.

Just multiply by 10

Had a guy use the saws and broke the chain tensioner on a Stihl 460 and a couple of Poulans.

Stihl dealer charged $38 for the chain tensioner kit and tensioner arm. Installation was $65.

Poulan dealer charged $3 for the "similar" usage part on the Poulan and installed it for free.

Stihl saw is much better but for the price and service you start to wonder.

Frankly I will keep the Stihl saws forever (but its gonna cost me) The Poulans I through away with out any after thought.

At least you can get Stihl parts. We have had a Husky in the shop for two months waiting for parts. Don't know what is wrong this time, usually only takes three weeks.

getting pts mite depend on knowin the rite people. there on this forum.
another source is older chainsaw shps with bone yds out back. stihl can stihl get a lot o stuff if u can wait . took me 6 months to get an 020 av gas line.
of course u could always email the people who sell pts on ebay. it their buisiness to find old pts,,apparently.
i have a famsaw by pioneer . perfect working order. but i know the ignition module on these saws was a weekness[or so ive heard]
i know either this one,, or my 650 evl echo are good, get it done saws.
farmsaw a bit better ,,mabe. but if critical parts go out ,,it ll be dn for a while ..
so i use the 036 mostly.as to just having saws ,,that just set around looking like yesteryear. not interested. shes got to do the job. no offence to those who do collect and restore older saws . im sure its an interesting hobby... if i had their kinda money..,i mite do it myself. good luck in u search.

parts

All I got to say is your dealers suck. I have heard all of this waiting, and I don't know why.Once in a great while a parts on a very new model will take a week or two, but a fuel line for an 020 or 200? That is rediculous.
We order every week. the longest I have waited is a week for a parts order. But you got to stock wear and tune up parts.
By the way, he got raped on the tensioner.

There, I feel better now.

You guys protect my sanity

I guess I could add to the "local" dealer story

The same dealer who sold me the 046 chain tensioner kit and chain tensioner arm told me some interesting things about Stihl bars.

Since I have not been to this specific dealer for about a year I took along some Rollomatic E bars (3/8 50 gage) needing new tips

The guys behind the counter told me it is too expensive for a new tip and I would be better off with new bars.

Then they show mw some cheap laminate bar made in Taiwan !
and "try" to tell me I would be better off.

So I had to ask them a few questions I learned from this site like types of bars, commercial or "home use" Types of grinders like Silvey , 511 , Types of cutters etc.

They had no knowledge of the majority of these concepts. Perhaps they had a bad hangover, some temporary mental incompacity or something else but they were playing me pretty good feeling they were gonna sell me 10 of those bars.

I also have to say the guy I normally deal with was not there (he was in his 50's or 60's) and if I had to guess these guys were probably in their early 20's (Maybe his children?)

Anyone have a tip for an older 25 inch Stihl bar?

So I really appreciate you guys and appreciate the Northern alliance even more when things like this happen to me and the crew.

Don,
Steve here... I may have the Stihl tip your looking for:
How many teeth does it have , and tell me the width of it...
Here is a list of the tips, I ordered one for a bar two weeks ago, no big deal.. Give your 5 dollar an hour f up behind the counter part numbers instead.. This list has the numbers left of the far right collum.

Sometimes it is not feasible to replace bar tips, particularly if the rest of the bar is in bad shape. You can pay half the price of a bar to get the tip and have it installed.

I have replaced very few tips over the years. I have some new tips in stock that are probably over 20 years old.

This is kind of funny. I learned a very long time ago about bars for Stihl saws. I have used Oregon brand bars for my saws ever since I found out it would save me about $15 to $20 on every bar. Then, I found out Stihl uses Oregon brand on some of their saws from the factory!!

You guys ...

bring up some valid points.

I grinded the bars and trued the groove on the main part of the bar prior to taking it to the dealer. Unfortunately the two guys at the dealership never even looked at the bar(s).

I think this is a classic case of "sell them what you have in stock" and not what a consumer needs or wants.

That's exactly it. I never buy from a dealer anymore. My local for Stihl is just too high priced, and doesn't carry anything BUT Stihl, and my local Husky has almost a 100% markup on bars and chains.

dealers

Most of the dealers feel the big box stores are going to put them under but if I can get it on the net at less than 1/2 the price what am I getting from the dealer? Ask the dealer if he is on the internet and you get a resounding "NO" he does not have a link to the internet and is clueless to interchangable parts. What is wrong with this picture??? I get parts UPS overnight cheaper than the dealer can get the part in a few weeks from today "I can get that part for you it'll take a few weeks to come in." He ought to be able to go on the net and have it over nighted, I can. Why can't the dealer? You either keep in step with the times or the times will step on you. No offence to the sthil dealers I don't know I speak of the one I used to deal with.

That's right. It got so the only thing I bought from the locals were the saws, but now with the net, I don't even buy those. I buy everything online, including saws. I bought bar and chain oil three weeks ago, and was talking to my local Husky dealer, he said what I paid for it is LESS than what he pays!!

I'd just like to know why saw parts are always far more expensive than they should be. Case in point:

Echo CS-3400... about $200, new, give or take.

Chain brake assembly (part only, no installation) $68...that's 34% of the price of the saw, for a part that probably cost under 5 bucks to make!

How do you justify that?

Even better:

Cylinder head for my 1984 Kawasaki KLT-110- $196.(complete)
Rear brake drum for same................................$168.

I don't have to be a rocket scientist to know there's no way in hell a simple 1 piece, cast aluminum part can be almost as expensive to produce/stock/ship as a cylinder head full of rockers, springs, valves, valve guides, valve seats..yada yada yada...

Steve, only problem I've noticed with those internet chains is that alot of times they aren't ground right, and I end up having to re-grind them to the correct angles etc. anyhow. Have you had this issue?
