I'm gonna bring my FS-110 4-Mix trimmer to Dan's for all to try out. Anyone think they got a hot trimmer? Bring it on!

I would like to see how it would stack up against a FS550 or RX265. Didn't you say earlier "there no replacement for displacement"

Wish I could be there

Bill

There IS a replacement for displacement, its called dans workshop! :D I'll have to ship my Husky 323L up there for you to feel a major powerhouse trimmer, and its all stock. I swear tht my trimmers powerband is pretty much any where between 3500 and 12.5K rpm quite honestly I'm amazed by this thing. the best stihl can do in an FS85 is a 10K rpm redline. I hate the stihl trimmer lines, they weigh a ton in comparison to my Husky they look ugly and boxlike, they sound louder for some reason, plus they're just plain UGLY. I aint buying a Stihl trimmer or edger ANYTIME soon or ever for that matter. I use them on school grounds all the time and HATE picking one up. Plus the stihl autocut 1 model head has a MASSIVE amount of improvement needed in it.

Sorry Oldsaw, I don`t feel that racial references are appropriate in this forum. Russ

string trimming[notice i didnt say brush cutting] around an home,is a learned skill. i prefer the smaller 25 cc units as i can one hand them easier. a good string trimmer operator usually doesnt need to break stride as he can trim as fast as he normally would walk. or at least i can.
it probably helps that i got 30 yrs commercial wk behind me..it pains me a little to watch some fellas trim. its a little like watching paint dry.

you and me both have the same problem with watching the undeucated trim with a good machine, I have my 323 for all trimming and brushcutting tasks, I can cut a full waist high jungle down to boot height in about an hour for a 100x100 ft yard, and I have learned pretty quickly to trim at the pace I walk at, fast, I dont walk slow.

I just have to sit around a watch the guy with an electric trimmer make a mess of his potted plants for a quick laugh, then I wind up trimming his lawn for him and mowing and all the other things one can think of that a lawn could need.

My 323L is equipped with a string head as the standard cutting attachment, plus a loop handle, and a $40 upgrade to a steel brushblade for it as well, its still a very nice machine.

Who knows, maybe I'll buy me a new small block V8 and try a trimmer made from there, hehehehehe:D

Well it looks like I have brought the thread off topic so I will try to return it. I am seriously looking at a FS 550/RX265 to add to my chainsaw stable. I am tired of bending over. Tony and Old_saw I am not talking about trimming grass.

I got an old stihl around here somehwere with a 041 powerhead on it.

Hi
I had one of the old Stilh trimmers here that used the 015 power head. I gave that one to chainsaw57 for him to display in the HOS.
If you want to have a hedge trimmer race, bring on the trimmers. I have one that is ported and it works very well.

good lowd jim if u got a a trimmer with an 041 powerhead .., what the heck u use for string. 3/8 inch cable.:) if i ever ask u if i kin borrow it ,,u be sure an tell me no. .:) u wus funnin wasnt u.

Most powerful trimmer I ever had was the one I attached to the left front wheel of my 4WD Dura Max.

I put a snowmobile ski on the right side.

Was kinda neat sitting in the cab, "cruisin' & cuttin" using the steering wheel to move the trimmer.

Was great for cutting a groove in the ground to put the wire in for the dogs radio collar. Trimmer ditch witch.

After I whacked off my wife's Azalea bushes, placed a few stones thru the neighbors barn windows, and when the blade bolt broke sending the blade screaming & flying like a mean flying saucer with teeth it got stuck in a pine tree....I figured I'd stop till I got a patent, and some liability insurance.

I laid a broken branch from an overhanging tree in the Azalea bush, so she'd think the branch killed it.
Got to come clean some day.

I have a Homelite SX-135 Bandit (Trimmer) that Dan worked on.

Dan, I'll bring that Hedge trimmer that you worked on so you'll have some competition...Rick/Saw Slut

I have used a 550 for a few years. It is very powerful with 4 lines on the string head, much faster than the 25.4 cc machines with 2 lines. Although heavy at over 20 lb., I have never found the weight to be a problem, as long as you use one of the heavy duty harnesses with wide shoulder straps.

In the hands of someone who knows how to use it, the tool in the attached photo can be faster than any string trimmer. I just started using one last year, and really enjoy it. It is a European style scythe, not to be confused with the American style with the curved snath. The American style, which is the kind I used many years ago, is a back breaking piece of junk compared to the European style. It runs on what you ate for breakfast, and never needs any carb adjustments.

A scythe is quicker in large areas. Experienced users can trim within a fraction of an inch of obstacles with no damage to the blade or obstacle. But a string trimmer is faster for intricate trimming than a scythe, and a scythe cannot edge beds or blow off sidewalks. I do use my gas powered trimmers for those jobs.

i appreciate u liking that scyth. but id like to have some of that bet..
understand we talking a trimmer ,which is a tool, used to give a well maintained lawn a trim job after u have mowed.
now a brush cutter is a totally different tool in my opinion. u can use it to cut small saplings ,an such.

Scythes are used mainly for mowing and aren't as effficient at trimming. I am going to try to post a link to a video of some people using scythes to mow and trim. I agree that they would not be good tools for commercial landscapers to use to trim well manicured lawns. They are fun to use, at least for me.

I also have a few crosscut saws and axes, and I do have fun using them. But except for limbing small stuff, the chainsaw is faster than an ax. I use these to cut my firewood:

Good god, what have you dont to that 3120? just jokin, but I DO want to have a BIG saw like that 3120 you have there including the bar.

mlk ,,to be honest ,i just wish i could still do the scyth thing.. if could.. id get myself back where i wanta be pretty fast. so im going low impact stuff and just doing it longer.. the main thing is heart an lungs, ,if i keep that part from falling apart.. who knows,, how far i mite make it back.:)
